I was reading the Mirror earlier and saw Holt's column headline referring to Jonjo's non-celebration on scoring the Swan's first on Sunday. Abbreviating, he said he's pleased to see this sort of behaviour coming back into the game, as it reminds him of a time, many years ago, when the players respected the fans and weren't just journeymen mercenaries. Shelvey acknowledged the respect he was given when he was one of our players, and Holt acknowledged that the Liverpool supporters demonstrated their respect for his gesture (and a ****ing good goal) by applauding him. Holt then went on to say that he had been sickened by many supporters who had commented that this was stupid and that he should have celebrated as Swansea now pay his wages. He referred specifically to large numbers of united supporters bemoaning what Shelvey did. Who the **** is bitter now? PS I noticed that the commentators last night were still bigging up united prior to kick off, commentating on their 'outstanding' display against Palace. During the course of the match, this dwindled to the extent that I don't think the dozy ****s could believe what they were watching. How the mighty are fallen
everyone was talking about the Palace result was if it actually meant something Hello, a relegation threatened team came to Old Trafford and the only breakthrough was after an hour when Evra dived for a penalty
Tribalism is what gives football an edge, but when it gets to the point where people can't recognise good football when played by a rival then, imo, that tribalism has gone too far. I'm glad that Jonjo showed respect for the fans of his old club and that those fans applauded his skill- that's how it should be. I went to a pub quiz last night- the pub is run by a Manyoo fan and his son is the barman. They were both miserable as sin after watching the game and have run out of patience with Moyes. Pity, I hope they don't get rid of him and bring in someone who's half decent.
I haven't been over there yet, but I reckon that might be the straw. Even if they get through at OT, the scars from last night will be slow to heal, like an ulcer
I would have had no problem with Shelvey celebrating his goal. It was a good goal and worthy of celebrating. The only time that I would object would have been had he run in front of The KOP kissed his new badge and thrown V-signs to the crowd as that would have been inflammatory. As for commentators, their job is always to Big Up any issue. But that gets harder in relation to United when each and every statement made gets thrown in their faces by results. Now the United team are turning on themselves with RVP bleating that other players are in areas where he wants to play - sounds a lot like spit and dummies to me
If they get through in the 2nd leg there will be plenty of "Man Utd comeback" stories but none will be able to whitewash the furious disappointment expressed by the fans and media so far
Holt also reminded the united supporters who complained about Shelvey were quick to applaud Ronaldo when he did exactly the same after scoring the goal that put them out of the CL last season
