I'm sure you've seen it before, but a player scores a dramatic game-changing goal and they take their shirt off to celebrate and get a yellow card. It happened to Fonte yesterday.

I've never been a massive fan of this rule. It's quite natural to celebrate, and it wasn't like Fonte was taunting the opposing fans, cheating to gain an advanatge or playing in a way which might injure another player, so why does his behaviour warrant a yellow card?

It's the rule and I can't belive that players don't have the discipline to keep their shirt on. Fonte wasn't the only player to get booked for this offence in the premier league over the weekend

Its because when a goal is scored thats when sponsors get there bang for their buck, so if a player takes their shirt of every time they score the sponser doesnt get what they paid for.

No. It's because the laws state that a player is not permitted to remove any part of their kit on the field of play.

Why do you suppose that is? Do players get booked for removing boots in celebration? No they don't.

Tom's right. If the rule is you can't remove any attire, then boots count too. Lot's of silly rules but not always consistently followed.

SaintJabie is asking why the law is what it is. Saying "because it's the law" is a nonsensical response, and I don't understand why you think a player removing an item of his kit is such a terrible thing. SuperSchneid is right by the way, they get close-ups of sponsors during goal celebrations.

Does a player get a red card if they remove two parts of their kit?

If they remove their shorts they might! For the record, I'm pretty sure a player can remove his boots during a goal celebration without being booked. It's only during play when that's not allowed.

Excellent question. In the match between Hannover and Werder Bremen, the Hannover striker Huszti scored the winning goal, removed his shirt, and then jumped onto the perimeter fence. He recieved two yellow cards followed by a red, and his appeal was rejected by the DFB. http://blogs.thescore.com/footyblog...cs-huszti-sent-off-after-scoring-game-winner/

When did anyone remove their boots to celebrate a goal? It would take ages.

I don't have a link (because I can't be bothered to find one) but in one of Tevez's goals for West Ham - I think against Spurs - he took his shirt off and dove into the crowd, he received only one yellow. I guess it depends on how much of an arsehole the ref is.

In response to the question why is it a bookable offence; FIFA (not me I will add) has previously stated that football is televised worldwide and in Muslim countries viwers may find it offensive to see bare chests.

The rule was also introduced to please sponsors who have been unhappy that their names are not always visible as the cameras follow a jersey-less goalscorer. It also helps commentators (presume this means overseas commentators not familiar with the players) correctly giving the goal-scorers name.

    Hope that helps...

I am not even convinced that it is correct in the laws to book him twice. The card is for "excessive goal celebration" so I don't see how you can excessively celebrate one goal twice. One yellow card for me, that is just my view though.

I always thought that jumping into the crowd was a health and safety issue. You're leaping into crowd of strangers, some of whom could be mental and willing to hurt you. Not so likely in this country I guess, but far more likely in places like Russia and Brazil. So it could be that it's one yellow for removing the sponsor, and another for violating health and safety.

I think Fonte took his shirt off and ran off into the crowd when he scored the winner at Brighton in League 1. Loved that game.
