Shall we keep Shelvey? What do you think shall we keep him because he has potential and will come good in a few years or cash out while we can get some decent money? I have mixed feelings over this, I think the guy has potential and needs to apply himself more, he's only 22 and has a few more years until he reaches his prime. the question for me is, does he have the right attitude to progress into the player he can be. Answers on a postcard please!
He's 22 with the playing experience in the Prem of an average 28 year old. Despite playing and training for years alongside high quality senior pros too numerous to mention (e.g. Gerrard) he hasn't learned a ****ing thing. You would have thought, they would have said either quietly or yelling at him something like "hey son, it's done like this ......" or "you do that again I'll find a way to kick you never mind their full back" ... or whatever. Raw talent is nothing if you don't have the know-how and intelligence to apply it. This is where the gap is and nothing at this point is going to close it.
Tough question.... how long does he have potential for?! He certainly has abiltiy but I've come to the conclusion he's just too much of a liability to keep giving him chances.
Sorry but for me he must go, I can see why Liverpool didn't want him, and yet he must have thought at the time, I have got to get it right at Swansea, but I think he's too stupid, time to move him on, seen enough.............
When he came here I thought what a player. {lease don't have a go at me but under GM he has gone backwards, whether that is down to Shelvey, the way we play or Monks inability to get the best out of a player who definately has talent who knows. I would keep till the end of the season and go from there. Maybe a new manager could get the best out of a player who has undoubted talent but cant show it at the moment.
Obviously this is about Shelvey but how many other players have retreated into a shell and not showing their true "potential " Dyer , Routledge, Rangel .Ash ,Leon (bit part this season I know ) but all players of Monk's era ,Fabianski along with Carroll are here to get more game time .Shelvey isn't progressing /improving at all in fact I'd say he's gone backwards in that he's playing for him self rather than the team .There's plenty of players out there with wasted talent/potential maybe he's just another one , out of all the players Ki is the only one who's bucking a worrying trend in overall decreasing performances .I've excluded Barrow Montero Emnes as they don't get a lot of game time.
is that down to the way he is being asked to play, is it down to his own tempremant, is it down to how monk has dealt with him. There are plenty of players who struggle under certain managers and then under a new one appear to be different players. The question is why has he gone backwards under GM when he did so well under the last manager. I am not trying to make this a GM/ML thing. I agree with KI and maybe the style of play now suits Ki more.
KI came to us from Celtic, which is a different level of football to the Prem. He needed to step up and adjust. In addition, there was the nonsense of the minimum number of games and the attitudes that orbit that sort of setup. I thought he always did well for us under ML but there was good competition for each position and so he was sharing time with others equally as capable. Ki went away to Sunderland and played regularly. He also went to the World Cup finals and played a DM role for his country in every game so had a good drilling in it. He's been used in that position this season, which he has executed well. He is an intelligent player. I don't know if it's a style thing per se but Ki has gone from strength to strength since originally coming to us. I think this is a player thing. I think Shelvey has hit his intellectual limit. When you keep making the same "mistakes" again and again despite - I presume - being admonished, coached, encouraged to do things differently or better then there's something intrinsic to the individual.
In practical terms Trund's is absolutely right. After today's red to Sig, we're too short handed to let him go unless Grimes is going to step up a level. Regardless of what anybody thinks of Shelvey now we have to keep him until season's end.
Think we've seen the best of the last 2 now, Montero has shown we need to aim higher. Jonjo, such a shame, on his day he can be superb, but don't think he's someone who can take advice to improve his game & temperament. There's reasons why Liverpool shipped him out... Also, add Tiendalli to the list, probably Jazz too, Tremmel & Rangel really needs to be weaned out as well.. Sign Carroll if the price is right & get a feckin midfield hard man. I really don't think Gomis is our answer, if he remains that is. So 2 new strikers, to get us back on course. Full back cover, both sides & a central defender to eventually take over from Ash, a young budding back-up keeper too. A busy time for Garry & the board ahead...
Shelvey reminds me of Joey Barton, talented but dodgy temperament and will probably end up moving clubs as Barton has. Monk should have subbed him yesterday and kept Carroll on.
Given Jonjo's reaction after his BIG WARNING from Monk he should have been on the bench, and only because we have a couple of injuries.
