This was a game we should've won and Wednesday lost, but it wasn't to be. From what I've seen, most fans are asking the same question "how did we not win that game". Someone on here said "the effing ball just won't go into their net" and it was true. For all the pressure and attacks we put on Wed's goal, the ball just wouldn't go in, it was like the ball was on an elastic band. Wed's, even though they went ahead first got their draw from a fluke shot aided by keeper error, it was a goal that should never have happened, unfortunately, it did. For those few on here who thought sarcasm was humour, let's analyse it. Did Reach miskick or mis shoot the ball? it certainly went high enough, and we've seen shots go higher from closer range. Luckily for reach, the ball dipped at last moment going in off the top of goal post and bouncing to the inside of the other post. Was that a pin point shot by reach? I don't think so but, you can't take the goal away from him irrespective of different peoples views. One of the basic rules for all keepers is to know where your goal posts are at all times without turning around, this is taught by most coaches from school level upwards. Good to great keepers will have a map of their goal area emblazoned in their mind so they instinctively know where they are, the other signs are the 6 yard box, and it's corners, the goal posts themselves, and the penalty spot, all these combined give the keeper indications of where he's stood, or should be stood; for most of the game he can sense, or see'em out the corner of his eye. One of the foremost abilities you will see in great keepers (Banks, Shilton, Bonetti, Stepney, Lev Yashin etc) is the ability to naturally judge, track and anticipate where a ball is going to go, or land before it gets there, hence why you see the good to great keepers coming out to collect the ball from crosses, corners, and shots like Adam Reach's. You also see the same instinctual ability when a keeper comes out and dives at the feet of an opposing player; the keeper knows he can get to the ball that split second before the opposing player can. When you look back on the video of Reach's goal, you'll see what BPF did wrong, or didn't do. BPF had ample time to judge and anticipate where Reach's shot was going, seconds to fans but split seconds to a keeper. BPF should've tracked the ball, anticipated where it was going to land and tipped it over the bar or caught it, obviously he didn't. You'll see that BPF never tracked back to follow the flight of the ball, he also misjudged where the ball was going to land, there was a gap between him and his goal line you could drive a double decker bus through, it also seems he thought the ball was going out, resulting in the ball going over his head. There is a saying amongst all players, and taught by coaches, when in doubt, put it out. There's only one instance where a keeper can be forgiven for a goal scored over his head, and that's coming out and being lobbed when it's a one on one situation. All things considered, the goal was a fluke, and with respects to BPF, where is the keeper coach, and what is he teaching, or not teaching BPF. Wednesday's goal was cancelled out about 9 mins later by a brilliant shot from Klich, and let's be honest, it was a bloody good goal. This was a game we should've won, but as one vlogger said "we'll play worse than that and win games" it's all part and parcel of football. We still had the football there, we upped our performance from last game, and when Berardi, Pablo and Roof are fit, we should be back to full strength and showing other teams how good we are. If only the great Peter bonetti had heeded your advice in Mexico 1970, England might have won another World Cup. Without resorting to laughing at this, from your choice of great keepers it seems clear what your footballing era is. When you were dominating your 6 yard box for the army, when was this? What footballs were you playing with? Are you aware just how many goals are scored by the way modern balls move and dip late in the air... did you watch the World Cup and see how many of the worlds best keepers made mistakes, how many goals are scored where the ball doesn’t go in the top or bottom corner... you as our resident humble expert are quick to point out positioning faults with BPF, but you will be aware that starting position is about judgement of likely threat. If he stayed on his line, you would criticise him for not narrowing the angle or being unable to come for crosses. The ball went miles over his head and dipped late, he didn’t dive as he had no chance of reaching it. Anyone who doesn’t have an agenda, whether they have the split second advantage of a keepers insight or not, can see that. It’s a public forum, you can write what you want, but when you constantly slate the players you have an issue with and get all giddy with excitement over the your pet favourites, you really can’t be too surprised with the level of derision you attract.
Got to now admit seeing that again, not a keeper in the world would have stopped that, such an unbelievable fluke, the likes of he will never score again.
LL I thought you were joking about keeper error. You’ve just said it again. Pity you’ve never played in goal or you’d know better ........
I'm an FA qualified coach who did a fair bit of one on one keeping but don't claim to know anymore than the adverage fan. It's not rocket science.
I think BPF positioning for where the ball was being played was spot on, that's why I think the fluke was unstoppable.
Shilton! What I never understood was, although it took a big deflection, that was yards outside the box and slowed the ball right down. It then sailed like a shuttlecock slowly over Shilton and straight down the middle of our goal. If BPF had let that one in then he may as well have retired, I mean if he is going to get blamed for the McBurnie header or Fridays goal he would have been roasted for that. Wilson’s goal for Derby was definitely a BPF error so, naturally, that would get discussed but I just don’t get hammering our own player for every goal that goes in, seems a bit weird to me.
It was, and it was for the mcburnie header too. He got beaten in the one place he couldn’t cover, had he been somewhere else, there would have been another part of the goal vulnerable.
