I'm surprised it hasnt struck me before. I know we have Cathro, but with Benitez committing long term, would it not be an idea to draft Shearer in to work for Rafa in the coaching team. Not only would he be a great personality to have around the team, but he would be privy to a class A education in football management. Im not sure what his contract states with the BBC and whether he would be able to complete both duties, but if shearer has a long term ambition to become Newcatle/England manager, then I think he should be banging on the door and eager to learn. It would obviously benefit all parties involved. Really need to remove the Turkey Picture! Euros is well over!
I think there have been a couple of feable attempts by ashley to change the way the club is run. Last year being a complete farce, but I believe the intent was there. Even though we have been relegated I have never seen such optimism on the run up to a season starting under ashley. I may be naive but I genuinely feel the club is changing direction. Shearer may have his reasons to not want to work for Ashley, but sometimes you just need to put your pride to one side and do what's best for everyone. I have no doubt shearer could manage england, he just needs to knuckle down and get the experience.
The problem is I think the dislike cuts both ways. Shearer certainly does not like Ashley, and the feeling is mutual. I don't think Shearer would work under him, and I don't believe Ashley would allow any manager including Benitez to employ Shearer. Some things will just never happen. Its not as if Shearer is shy about using his public press position to criticise the way the club is run i.e. Ashley. Ashley even changed the name of the bar
Ain't gonna happen is it, Shearer has made it perfectly clear he disapproves of Ashley on MOTD and has been direct in his criticism of him...remember him appearing in an advert saying "it's what St James's Park is to Newcastle" after Ashley renamed the stadium? And the feelings mutual from Ashley. We don't need him anyway, Rafa is more than capable and has assembled a good back room staff, Shearer is a legend, but only as a player, he should stick to the couch for now.
While Shearer is an absolute legend and one of the best strikers in the world ever.......he's dull and won't be a good manager or coach in my opinion.
I've always been of the same opinion Chaos, but every interview with every player whose been at the same club or along side shearer has always said he is the funniest or the practical joker of the group, I guess we will never really know
If Shearer was serious about management he would get off his backside and take a job in League 1. He needs to prove himself before he is ever considered again for the role.
Got to agree about this, easy to sit and be a critic as it doesn't cost him, as he learnt last time it is much harder to stand up and have a go, he hasn't bothered to do any coaching or any other aspect of input since and I think like Henry given the ultimatum he prefers the easy life.
Above is true really, firstly it was a bit of a disaster last time, and in moat cases a manager works their way up "mucking out the pigs before your a farmer", a la Nigel Clough. Secondly a great player rarely makes a great manager, there are a few exceptions up, but that's the general rule. Finally he is indeed dull, both as a player, as a manager and as a pundit. Don't want him managing, so stick to the couch, and even then I'd much rather hear Danny Murphy's analysis than Shearers.
