http://www.sortfootball.co.uk/1/post/2012/01/ryan-shawcross-is-he-international-class.html World class defenders are hard to come by, particularly the young and talented technically gifted players. Stoke fans have often tipped Ryan Shawcross as being a future England defender to possibly replace Rio Ferdinand at the heart of the defence, however questions still lie around the Stoke defenders confidence and consistency at that level. Ryan, as a quiet but confident assured player on the pitch for Stoke has tasted the success of being called up for the full England squad even though it came on the back of the most unfortunate circumstances having been sent off for a late tackle on Arsenal’s midfielder Aaron Ramsey which left the youngster with a broken leg. Since that call up Ryan Shawcross hasn’t been seen in it again. However, he has come back solidly from the setback of the red card and the abuse and criticism from football fans for an unfortunate tackle which seriously injured a fellow professional. Questions still linger over whether the broken leg on Ramsey has dented his self-confidence as his form dipped towards the end of the 09/10 season and since then he has failed to hit the heights that he was reaching during games leading up to the tackle. However, in the 2010/2011 season Shawcross took the captaining which shows how highly the Stoke hierarchy rate him. Furthermore, on the pitch Stoke have gone from strength to strength having achieved safety in the Premier League again and also reaching the FA Cup final. Ryan Shawcross has been pretty much an ever present in Stoke’s astonishing achievements. Some would argue that him being pivotal in Stoke’s success therefore justifies him getting a call up. However, from studying his overall performances in the past 2 seasons, critics would argue he has been a shadow of the player he was before the Aaron Ramsey controversy. Ryan Shawcross may need to move from Stoke City to improve his chances for an England call up. In a way Stoke City are a hindrance to his progress as a player, for example whenever he gets the ball now he looks up instantly to hit the long ball for a striker opposed to playing the ball out of defence which is something he did when he first joined the club in 2007. He also lacks the concentration required at the highest level as this season he has lost his marker on several occasions to cost his side crucial goals, for example losing his marker for key goals in the carling cup game v Liverpool and the home defeats by QPR and Newcastle. A final criticism would be that as a captain he hasn’t really lead in a way that most captains do. He doesn’t seem to be vocal enough for a captain and his although often he has been consistent enough, he is never a standout player and is often been carried by his defensive partner Robert Huth. Overall, I believe that if Ryan Shawcross can get back to the form he was showing in 2009/2010 then he can force himself into the England scene again. However, from recent showings it looks like maybe he isn’t the player that Stoke fans and many people thought he would become. Even the most diehard Stoke fans would have to admit that he is only a midtable Premier League player from his showings over the past 12 months.
What a load o bollox sarge dont u think .......... Solid as a rock and i beg to differ at his age how many are better ?
Potter Palm Of course I have always rated Ryan Shawcross and although I don't agree with some of that article I must say... Both me and a few of my fellow Stokie's have said a few times. Ryan is not the same player these days. Of course it took him quite a while to get his head around that Ramsay tackle and i think any player would. Just the fact that he got so much abuse. Wenger has never forgiven him, I doubt Ramsay ever will and of course the Gunners fans we're sadly asking for miricles if we want them to forgive and forget. That said, I always said BEFORE that time that Huth was a fantastic influence on Ryan's performances, he hardly ever put a foot wrong. And, I do think that when Tony was playing Huth at right back Ryan did seem to struggle at times. So, Pulis decides to put Huth back where we all know he plays best and Ryan is showning his confidence and trust in Huth and his game has certainly IMO back almost to how it was. Agree also that, for his age he is up there with the best and I'm sure if he did play for example Utd, within six months he would be in the England squad. At least as back up as I believe he is as good maybe better than Cahill.
Hmm that's a tough call, he is NOT the player he was and has NOT developed as wa all thought - the point made about Stoke's stye of (dare I say) football is valid. However, I think that the biggest influence on Ryan has been Faye (of course Huth has helped latterly), but certainly in our first and for part of our second season in the PL, Faye was immense - in my opinion
Yup I forgot about Faye, fantastic player and we still miss him, in my oppinion. At least the type of player he was.
I think the article is very well put and highlights the affect that TP "CAN" have on certain players careers! I do believe that he is not the same player as the pre Ramsey tackle, but I dont see that as neccessarily a bad thing! To be fair to the guy, I think he is now more calculated and less heated in his approach to the defence of our goal! However, the author hits some very strong notes in relation to the STOKE EFFECT on the percieved abilty of a player. He does: Hoof the ball under instruction! He does man handle in the box - I would assume under instruction. He does loose his marker, however this is normally because he is covering other people mistakes or because our defence is set up incorrectly due to the management! He isnt vocal enough - BUT I would take him anyday over the likes of Terry who feel that the can bully a ref! In his defence, I think that he is controlled (as all of our players are) by the manager and has little independence or leadership allowance because that would not suit TP's style! I think it is fundementally wrong to judge a player on what he does directly rather than what he is capable of? But I do concur that the likes of Crapello would be concerned that Shawx would be unable to pass to a RB (I think Crapello would have to show him what one looked like and where they were on the pitch) or willing CM who would come and get the ball and relieve pressue of the defence! In addition I do think that at international level he may conceed penalties and I think that would be the hardest thing for him to change in his game! For me though he is better than Cahill, Jagellka, Terry, Ferdinand - he has just never been given the chance!
If Micah Richards can't get in ahead of Johnson, Shawcross has got pretty much no chance of getting in. Til Crapello has gone at least.
As much as i like ryan, i do not believe at this moment in time he is England Quality. Still has a lot to learn in my eyes, but will he learn that whilst SCFC have a certain manager?
Hi To get into the England set up Ryan will have to move or else we have midfield players and full back who will provide angles for him to pass the ball rather than pump it forward and he is having to do at present. Woodgate at right back passed it square or backwards at least 3 or 4 times in the first half last Saturday and did nit offer himself as an option. However, The number of times Ryan got Woody out of trouble and swept up the porblems, I lost count. I do think he is much more suited to having Huth next to him. We could all do with some full backs to provide some balance. A bit of the point but I think that Ryan has to improve drastically his passing. Must go dinner beckons!
