Weir Bar set to reopen but Hessle residents object to 2.30am bid please log in to view this image RESIDENTS fear there will be an increase in antisocial behaviour if a bar is allowed to stay open until the early hours of the morning. The Weir Bar in Hessle has been closed for about two years, but could be set to reopen soon. Darren Goulbourne, of the Weir Bar, wants to be able to serve alcohol until 2am and open until 2.30am, seven days a week. His application has been rejected by Hessle Town Council and will go before East Riding Council's Licensing Sub-committee on Friday, November 13. Councillor David Nolan, chairman of planning and traffic at Hessle Town Council, said there was a history of antisocial associated with the bar. He said: "We had about 30 or 40 residents turn up strongly objecting to it because of the past history of antisocial behaviour," he said. "They made a number of complaints about drunkenness, late-night music, foul language and people having sex in gardens and climbing over cars." Resident Jillian Hartley and her mother Eileen Hartley, both of Ferriby Road, Hessle, raised their concerns at the last town council meeting. Jillian said: "When the antisocial behaviour happened then, we had a police station, and now, we haven't even got that. "That closed down so they (the police) can't guarantee to come and help if there are any problems. "We have got kids round here, we have got old people and families. We are not trying to kill his business, we just want peace." Ms Hartley said parking is also a concern. "We are having trouble now, it's not going to cope with it then," she said. "If it closed at normal pub hours seven days a week I wouldn't complain. But he's going for a certain crowd that want their last drink at 2am, so he has to go for the longer licence." The application asks for permission to hold entertainment until 2.30am and serve alcohol until 2am. Trevor Ryan, of Ferriby Road, is also unhappy about the prospect of the bar being open so late. He said: "I have a number of concerns. The main is that the last time Mr Goulbourne had a licence for the Weir Bar, we had endless nights where we just didn't get to sleep until after 2am or 3am. "There was a great deal of noise but also a great deal of disturbance. I know I can't hold Mr Goulbourne responsible for such behaviour but I'm pretty confident that, if he gets this licence until 2.30am, which is much later than it was before, that sort of behaviour will be repeating. "I don't object to it being open as a pub at all, it's just the lateness." Cllr Nolan said some businesspeople of the town did support the application but the majority of residents were worried about disruption. He said: "Some people were in favour of it. Mainly I would say traders from Hessle First. "Obviously, we all want to see the place open rather than shut, but it's the hours which are the issue. "The residents living nearby were predominantly opposed to it. "The traders, although they are saying yes, most of them go home at 5pm and they don't have to live with the consequences of it." Mr Goulbourne was unavailable for comment. http://www.hulldailymail.co.uk/Weir...tory-28073618-detail/story.html#ixzz3q3tY18j3
Yes, let's all be tucked up in bed by midnight. Some continentals if they come to the City Of Culture will be distinctly underwhelmed at the number of places in the area where a family can go out, have a meal after 9pm, no 15 year old allowed like at home of course, and then expected to go back to their hotel at 11pm or go to a vertical drinking den or a club full of younger people where you can't hear yourself talk. Not unique to Hull of course but Hull city centre is lacking compared to some other places and even the "vibrant" Avenues areas find most places closed before midnight with nowhere a mixed group would be welcomed after 9pm.
Which is why I said in the area. Hessle, the home of the iconic symbol of Hull, the Humber Bridge, is in the area, isn't it?
I blame Allam for the early closing times of licensed premises in this country. Give me ten minutes and I'll think of a reason, oh hang I've thought of something. He's a Muslim and they don't drink. That'll do.
The blame lies firmly at the feet of David Lloyd George. Who wasn't a Muslim. He was Welsh though. Which doesn't make it any better, but doesn't make it any worse. He also introduced the No Treating Order. Which essentially made it illegal to buy a round. Still upheld by my mate Terry every time I tell him to put his hand in his pocket.
Sorry its quite clearly the fault of those dickhead doctors on early morning itv Dont eat bacon, sausage blah blah No red meat , they even said the other week to much fruit is bad for you So doc how much alcohol should you drink ??? Ooh about 50ml a year i mean whats next ???? Yeah anyway not really bothered
Nah, he wasn't a ginga Haps. He was black as a youth and white from middle age. I'm talking hair here obvs. I'm not suggesting that he changed race half way through his life. Still Welsh though. There's no escaping that.
I was wandering through Hessle last night (Friday) and was surprised at how lively the place was, I had been hearing stories about Hessle's demise now that Anlaby has its shopping centres along with Willerby drawing people from Hessle. But the restaurants and pubs seemed fairly well attended and with not being an night owl these days I haven't been round and about like I used to be. Maybe its just the Hessle shops that are suffering during the day, Friday night in Hessle was not too bad.
