Steven Gerrard believes silverware is just as important to Liverpool's season as a return to Champions League football.

The Reds skipper admits he would like nothing more than to compete in Europe's elite competition next year but insists it will not be the club's sole focus.

Gerrard told LFC Magazine: "Getting back in the top four is a priority, but I wouldn't say it's our only priority.

"Bringing those European nights back to Anfield is what we all want. Some of the best nights of my career have been in the Champions League and I want to experience a few more before I eventually hang up my boots.

"It's difficult to watch it on TV on a Tuesday or Wednesday night knowing we are not involved. Everyone here is striving to get back there and the sooner it happens the better.

"At the same time it's about trophies for me and I see the FA Cup and Carling Cup as also being very important. Because we are only involved in three competitions we have to focus on all of them.

"There is no European football so you can afford to focus more on the Carling cup. We haven't done well in any of the cups domestically since 2006. It's time we gave the fans a bit of excitement again. They deserve it and there would be nothing better than going to Wembley. That would be fantastic for everyone."

Gerrard also revealed how a surprise visit by the club's new owners helped to raise his spirits during his sixth-month absence with injury.

The midfielder has been hugely impressed by Fenway Sports Group since they took control of the club last October and feels Liverpool have made great strides in that time.

He added: "It's been a good 12 months on the pitch and off the pitch. They've stabilised the club and certainly put the money in. They've backed the manager and Damien Comolli. They've been very supportive of the team.

"I thought it was a brilliant touch for them to come and visit me in the hospital when I had my infection. I was very low at the time but they called me and made the effort to come and see me. That gave me a huge lift and I was very grateful to them for it."

why do we always get this bull after a bad result?

after utd (a good result actually) we got how dissappointed the players were and all that.... draw badly with norwich when we should have had 6 and guess what a fluff piece comes out.

I'm getting pretty sick of the lfc website to be honest.

throw up a there's the cups to come and top 4 is our aim stuff to distract from the true situation.

Having a bad day mate? I get your point but everyone does it, look at Hernandez signing a new contract yesterday.

I use the club site to get people talking on here and to keep the board content ticking over.

Why do you always present a negative view?

A fluff piece <laugh> I'm always quite fond of a bit of fluff meself

On topic however I think the sentiment as MITO says is probably a bit "tell us something we don't know" with regards to getting into Europe/winning trophies etc. Interesting about the visit to the hospital though, probably showing a bit more understanding of how to deal with the people at the club than the previous regime ever did <ok>

My point is "you're taking through your backside and must be divorced from reality" when you are talking abou the top 4 and wembley at this point. After drawing the last two and seeing 4th spot receed into the distance while arsenal catchup and spurs sail past?

I think its hig time they stopped talking about aspirations and started concentrating o nthe next game. What was it kenny said every game last year, nothing about top 4 or top 6 but take every game as it comes.

I'm sick of this stuff about getting fans hopes up all the time and i wish the team would get focused on the game in hand and go get the results now.

we got john flanagan being quoted about it'd be great to ge tto wembly.... STOP SETTING THE KID UP... why are the webiste reporters asking stupid questions like that of a kid who might well not even play! and then if stoke beat us (as they did in the league) our club looks foolish, arrogant and out of touch with reality.

At least spearing interview was more honest and talked only about the game in fornt of him if he gets a chance.... thats what i want to hear from them.

There have only been 9 league games this season and you're already spouting negativity - oever and over and over again. There is no way that you can justify that 4th spot is receeding into the distance. So Spurs presently hold the spot - there's still three quarters of the season to go! Arsenal may have picked up 3 points at the weekend but that was against a Stoke side that have proved themselves to be faril on their travels. The concentration at this time has to be on ourselves, our players and our performance. We are creating more chances than any other team in the league. Hence our concentration has to be on increasing our convertion rate! That does not mean throwing the baby out with the bathwater and reverting to a type of football that Liverpool have not played since failure of the Tony Hately experiment.

Why not talk to Flanno about his hopes. It's good to hear that he still feels as though there is at least the possibility of starting even though he is rated as third choice.

Nobody is taking their eyes off the next game. That is just a silly comment
