Several senior Sunderland players do not have relegation clauses in their deals.

If Sunderland are relegated some top stars will not see their wages drop.

The Sun says Jermain Defoe and Jack Rodwell are among those who would keep their large Premier League salaries.

Dutchman Jeremain Lens has a major cut written into his Black Cats contract but may decide to head back to Holland instead.

We would probably have more chance of bouncing back without Jack Flash, but sadly I think we are stuck with him until his contract runs out.

Simple answer is to stay up and we'll not have to worry about it.

    Job's a good'n.

The mags kept their full squad a few years ago and bounced straight back up.

Its a risk though, on those wages.

Anyway Big Sam's never been relegated so I'm hanging my hopes on that!

If we do stay up I'd like to think most of the senior players would be released anyway.

As far as I'm concerned Catts, Larrson, O'shea and a few others can go/ be released.
JD will only stay if we stay up and Rodders, although looking like he could become a footballer again, well either way stay or go I wouldnt be too concerned.

Lets hope we manage to bring off yet another great escape as Sam with most of his January signings can spot a decent player and next season could be oh so wonderfully boring with no fear of relegation.

Apart from Catts, everything you've said there Gil will probably happen anyway this summer. Unless a promotion team takes Catts, I reckon he'll stay.

The rest have to go. Unless we stay up, in which case, the rest have to go anyway, except for Defoe.

Sam Allardyce will stay on as Sunderland manager even if they are relegated from the Premier League, despite fears he would quit if they dropped into the Championship.

Allardyce enjoys an excellent relationship with Sunderland owner Ellis Short and as long as he received reassurances about the extent of the cost cutting that will be involved if the Black Cats fail to avoid the drop, he is willing to lead the team as they look to make an immediate return to the top flight.

The former Bolton Wanderers and West Ham boss has experience of managing in the Championship and knows how tough it can be to come straight back up after relegation, but Short has made it clear he would like him to stay.

Although Allardyce still believes Sunderland can get out of relegation trouble, he has plans in place should they fail and has an idea of the players who will want to remain on Wearside and those who will ask to leave.

It is a pragmatic approach after Allardyce admitted his side have made things extremely tough for themselves by drawing too many games, including the Tyne-Wear derby before the international break.

The Black Cats are two points adrift of safety, but have a game in hand over fourth-from-bottom Norwich City, who they play in a fortnight’s time.

Sunderland’s “prepared for the worst” approach is in stark contrast to neighbours Newcastle, who are directly below them in the table.

The Magpies’ new manager, Rafa Benitez, has a clause in the three-year contract he signed earlier this month that means he will not stay on if the Magpies drop into the second tier, which would mean they had to find a new manager to repair the damage.

Allardyce will have a meeting with Short as soon as Sunderland know what division they will be playing in next season, but he has the hunger and determination to continue.

There have been suggestions the 61-year-old, who admitted he had contemplated taking a lengthy break from the game after leaving West Ham at the end of last season, would retire if he failed to keep Sunderland in the top flight.

Allardyce is aware he will have to lose players if Sunderland go down, as there are some who will not want to play outside of the Premier League. However, he wants to make sure he will not be left with a shell of a squad and that he will be able to replace those who leave.

Owner Ellis Short has assured his manager that there would be no relegation firesale CREDIT: PA
Short has already indicated to him that will not be the case, although there will inevitably be budget restrictions in place.

Sources at the Stadium of Light have also informed Telegraph Sport that every single first team player has a relegation clause, which automatically cuts their wages by 50% if they fall into the Championship.

Newcastle, though, have not been so wise, as they did not envisage being in another relegation battle after spending £80m on new players this season.

Only a relatively small percentage of players at St James’ Park have agreed deals that will force them to take a wage cut in the second tier, which will put a huge strain on the club financially if they do lose their top flight status.
