to be honest i have never felt that secure from corners or felt we could score from one since Big Sammi left, he was such a threat and not scared to get his head in there and get hurt. big big loss he was for both ends.
We aren't as bad at set-pieces as we think we are. Around the league average in scoring and conceeding. I think what makes me mad about set pieces is Gerrard's delivery. When it is on point it is ****ing good. Half the time though he can't beat the first man and it is a nuissance!
Gerrard's free kicks (at a better angle) are far superior. However, Coutinho, Suarez etc have all taken corners and no-one has a consistent impact. Set pieces are 2 things: 1) the delivery 2) the target Whilst the delivery is often disappointing, there is a lack of targets who move and actually fight for the ball. In the eventual case that they actually get to the ball first, we have the worst headers in the league lol. However, the people who can actually head the ball and attack it are: Gerrard Skrtel Sakho Toure Suarez is a good at those glancing headers. Torres was such a good target as well - strong in the leap, great movement, and great technique. Such an underrated header of the ball. Edit: Kuyt and Lucas are the worst headers I have ever seen.
We might as well try a driven ball to the top of the box for a volley a few times with Suarez/Sturridge/Gerrard at the top of the box.....
He was. I understand he is trying to hit that whipping and dipping ball that just beats the first defender and puts the keeper in an " oh ****" position but damn, bit more consistency!
I hate him taking corners normally. First man or sails over everyone. I'd rather we play them short to gerrard so he can whip it in first time, no one better at doing that.
Drives me nuts mate. We've been saying for years now that he shouldn't take corners, best place for him is either arriving late into the box or sitting on the edge of the area for the volleys. I think his balls from free kicks are a different matter though. The op has a point that on occasion we are guilty of not attacking the good set pieces well enough but in general it's the fact it hits the first ****ing man so there's nothing to attack Two things should lead to an instant club fine....foul throws and hitting the first man from a fecking corner.
I think sometimes we are bullied into short corners but they are a complete waste of a supposed advantage play. We were great at defending set pieces under Rafa even though we got stick for zonal marking. BR is a man to man, man.
Imagine!!!! That other point is hand in hand...... why make the run to the near post if the ball is not even gonna get there since hollywood can't beat the first man? ( paraphrasing of course). I remember a few years back I think we had Alonso or someone else on the set pieces and Gerrard in the box and he scored a few goals from it, thought it was brilliant and what we were going to stick with.
Used to be but he never seems to hit them nowadays. Even when he does he tries to place them or blazes over the bar, we never see the power blast on target anymore. Sunday League would make a fortune
The first few Coutinho took I thought here we go, finally a player who can put it on the money AND who's height we're not exactly going to miss in the middle. Since then he's been no better than anyone else unfortunately although I'd still like to see him take more than Gerrard.
Not when I'm playing I know what you mean about his volleying now but I've been thinking this for about 8 bloody years so it was relevant once upon a time
