Looks like we may have some height in the side this season so hopefully unlike last season we may pose a threat from corners, free kicks ect.You never know the opposition may not poke the ball out of bring our attacking players down needlessly as we might actually score goals from set pieces
Not too fussed about about set pieces either way actually as Hull City create enough goal scoring opportunities from open play.
Yes but at much as I love our flamboyant flair a few goals from set pieces last season and we could have made the pay offs
With this new striker NP I would like to see Andy Dawson take free kicks from the right side outside of the area swing them in with his left foot towards the keeper were NP (Not Nigel Peason) gets across the keeper and get his head on the ball.
I know we had a few threads about the lack of goals from corners last season, but when was the last time we scored a direct free kick? I think it might have been Geo at Burnley in 2009 and that didn't even count...
Seriously? Dawson is great for the very edge of the box type free kicks that have an opportunity to hit the target, but his quite frankly shocking corners, which float in at about half a mile an hour are just as much, or even more of the reason why our defenders scored a handful of goals from set pieces.
Completely agree. Dawson's direct free kicks are decent but his crossed ones are ****ing dire. He floats them as high as possible and puts them right on the far corner of the penalty box, a distance from which you could never score a header and you're facing the wrong way anyway
30% of goals are scored from set pieces, we scored about 8% of ours from them, so clearly we are lacking in that area. We are missing a great trick that other clubs are clearly making the most of, how can you not be fussed.
I was just about to ask how many goals are scored from set pieces because I've long thought we've been missing a trick there but then when I started thinking about, I wondered if because we see the awesome free kicks going in like Beckhams, do we forget the 99 other free kicks that don't? How accurate is that 30%? That's suggesting that some teams score from 1 in 3 set pieces, which seems awfully high. Is there a major difference between say corners, free kicks within 5 feet of the penalty area, 15 feet of the penalty area etc? I got the impression during the recent Euro's that it was easier to score if slightly further away from the area.
Yes I think you're right. Two years ago though. The closest we've come since then I think was also Cairney against Blackpool on the opening day of last season when he hit the bar. Unfortunately everyone apart from Cairney (even Koren ffs) just tries to smash it into the wall and makes themselves look silly.
It just looked to me that last season most sides had done their homework and thought that giving away corners and free kicks against us was a comfortable option
Bruce being a renowned goalscoring defender might help our lads at the back be more of a threat from free-kicks, shame Hobbs is missing for a while still in that aspect.
I don't know how reliable the figure is, but you're working the wrong way there. What they said was 30% of goals come from set pieces. - If you take the first 100 goals to be scored in the Championship then 30 of them will have come from corners or freekicks. There could be any number of set pieces in those games.
