Now she has lost in the last sixteen, not even justifying her seeding and having survived two scares in earlier rounds, do you think the newspapers will stop saying what a terrible state women's tennis is in. It was the journalists who assumed that she would win - shows what they know. Venus in big trouble too......

It will be nice to have a winner who isn't a Williams' sister just for a change this year.

I think that the women's game is really interesting right now. Some might say that the standard is not so good. I disagree. Some of the tennis played by Sharapova, Azarenka, Li Na, Lisicki recently, etc ( I could list several more) has been superb.

Although the standard of the mens game is really good right now its fairly predictable who the last four will be in the grand slams (certainly Wimbledon right now) and, even if one of these four was to suffer a surprise defeat in the quarters its highly likely that the eventual champion will still come from one of the top four seeds.

The women's game by comparison is much more unpredictable and with it far more interesting because the winner of any women's championship is almost impossible to call. Every event is wide open.

Look at this year's Wimbledon. Only four of the top 20 seeds remain in the event and two non-seeds have also made it through to the quarters as well. There were one or two predicting a Williams sisters final yet again but even Serena/Venus are out as well now.

Who is going to win the Wimbledon Ladies Singles title? No idea!! The bookies favourite is Sharapova although my own pick is Lisicki. But you could also make a case for Azaenka. Kvitova, Bartoli and so on.

Like I say. Its a tough one to call. Which makes it all the more interesting.....
