Donât think thereâs been an article done yet for player ratings for the season so thought Iâd do one. At least itâs something different from whatâs going on at the moment. Feel free to disagree as Iâm sure some of you will. I've only done the players that featured regularly. Peter Gulacsi- 5/10 Poor signing, never really looked confident in his own ability and a fair few errors cost us important points. Adriano Basso- 7/10 Think a few people were unsure of him when he signed but featured regularly under NP and did well. Shame injuries stopped him playing under Barmby, wish him well for the future. Vito Mannone- 7/10 Iâm not Mannoneâs biggest fan, feel like heâs always about to make a mistake but to be fair to him he was a calming influence and his run of clean sheets proved this. Would take him back next season but if money is tight spending £1m+ on a keeper isnât too sensible. Liam Rosenior- 7/10 Had a solid ¾ of a season but felt during March his performances dropped off until the last couple of games. Then again most of our players were the same so could have just been fatigue. Need to get him signed to new deal as I think it runs out at the end of the season. James Chester- 9/10 Playerâs player of the season and couldnât believe he didnât win the fans award. Excellent season, hardly put a foot wrong and I just pray heâll still be here next season. Could go on to be our best ever centre back if we can match his ambitions. Jack Hobbs- 8/10 Feel slightly sorry for Hobbs as in any other team he would be the stand out defender but Chester takes all the limelight. Another solid season and wish him best luck in recovering from his injury and seeing him back in the black and amber around Christmas time. Liam Cooper- 7/10 Nice to see him get a good run of games at this level. Looked shaky to start with but grew into the role and didnât let us down. Looks good enough for a 3rd choice centre back but it will be interesting to see if he plays while Hobbs is injured or if we bring somebody more experienced in. More match practice needed so small mistakes like the ones made for West Hamâs goals can be eradicated. Andy Dawson- 7/10 Won his place back and kept it under Barmby. Always 100% committed and still has much to offer next season. Lack of pace is becoming a worry though and many wingers are finishing the match with much baggier shirts than when they started. Nice to see him get a testimonial at the end of next season. Joe Dudgeon- 7/10 An encouraging first season for the youngster. Didnât look out of place in the first team but found chances limited after Christmas. Could do to improve when on the ball but that will come with game time. I expect him to take the left back spot off Dawson next season. Paul McKenna- 8/10 Closest thing we have had to an Ashbee. Very solid, keeps the ball well and not afraid to get stuck-in. Think the current formation suits him well but not sure how well he would do in a 2-man centre midfield. Hope his legs donât go next season. Corry Evans- 7/10 A solid first full season. Improved on last season and next season should be even better. Can become a key player for us if he keeps progressing. Sometimes can be a little frustrating as he has very good technical ability but doesnât seem to have the confidence to really show it. Tom Cairney- 6/10 Every season he seems to have a great pre-season and starts as first choice but then just drifts away. Fantastic technical ability and also seems to have taken on board criticism of not being physical enough. Next season needs to push on and cement a first team place because he is certainly good enough. Robert Koren- 8/10 Very good season and his importance to the team was shown when we lost 5 in a row when he was injured. Has the tendency to go missing in games but when he then scores from 30 yards you canât complain. Hopefully at his best again next season every game as our team is built around him and relies on him to perform. Cameron Stewart- 6/10 Great to see him back after his injury and started off brilliantly. Sadly his performances dropped for whatever reason. Looks to be suffering from low confidence but to be fair to him he always kept trying to take people on and dribble past them. Summers rest will do him good and letâs hope heâs back to his best next season. Robbie Brady- 6/10 Another player in his first season and started off well. Looked to be the âreal dealâ but again like others, performance dropped. Has got good ability but could do to concentrate a bit more on getting the basics right than showing off all the time. Richard Garcia- 7/10 In the very few games he played did well. Shame the linesman at West Ham got the decision spot on as it was a cracking header and would have been a nice way for him to end his time with us as it looks like he wonât be here next season. Has always given 100% during his 5 seasons so thanks Rich and good luck. Josh King- 7/10 Looked like we had signed a You Tube player at first as he didnât really impress. However, proved us all wrong and looked a very good player towards the end of the season. Maybe lacking a bit in technical ability but this can be worked on and would like to see him back here next year. Quite possibly the fastest player ever?!? Nick Barmby- 7/10 Was our super sub once again and a shame he had to give up his playing career but did it for the good of the club. Scored the winner in his last ever game for us. A great player with a career to be proud of. Arron McLean- 7/10 Maybe been a bit generous with a 7 but canât be bothered with half marks so Iâll round up. Great work ethic but not enough goals. Played out of position but just donât have any faith in him scoring when he gets a chance. Matty Fryatt- 8/10 A good return of 16 goals from playing up front on his own and quite often been surrounded by opposition defenders with no City player in sight. Needs somebody to play alongside him as he clearly knows how to score at this level. Our only natural goal scorer.
agree with most things. I would give Hobbs an 9 though. I thought he was brilliant throughout the season !
Gulacsi - 6 - Never thought he was that bad. One very bad game, one very good game and a load of average ones in my opinion Basso - 7 - Did well when he played but couldnt stay fit Mannone - 8- Played every game since signing and did a very good job Chester - 9 - PL quality Hobbs - 9 - As the OP says he is in Chester's shadow some of the time but he's had a great season too Cooper - 7 - Hard to get in the team with the above two playing so well but did well when he got in the team Bradley - 6 - Probably wouldn't have expected to make the first team yet and got some games at Aldershot too so a decent year for him Rosenior - 8 - Good solid season playing almost every game McShane - 4 - Terrible when he got his chance Dudgeon - 7 - Looked very good to me but will be disappointed with a lack of game time since Barmby took over Dawson - 6 - Not one of my favourites. He's been reliable and does a decent job but easy to take on and his forward play is far too negative McKenna - 8 - Very good first season with us. Agree with the 'closest thing to Ashbee' comparison Evans - 6 - Again I'm not a big fan. Played a lot of games and good in the tackle but I expected better from him going forward this year. Cairney - 6 - Done well when he's had a chance but it hasn't been often enough and he'll be disappointed. Olifinjana - 4 - Hardly got on the pitch and when he ever did play you could see why not! Koren - 8 - Amazing at times but could have had more of an influence in some games, particularly second half of the season Brady - 7 - Been very good at times and obviously talented but needs to use it better. Pusic - 5 - Never impressed me. Stewart - 7 - Started very well after his injury but got gradually less effective as the season went on Barmby - 6 - Didn't play much as is expected at his age but did well when he came on Garcia - 7 - Disappointing that he took so long to get back in the team after his injury but he did well at the end of the season and deserved a new deal in my opinion. King - 8 - Looked very good towards the end. If he was here longer he might have been a candidate for PotY. McLean - 7 - A reasonable season overall, never really played up front after Barmby changed the system but did OK on the wing at times. Fryatt - 7 - Improved as the season went on, started off missing chances all over the place but became more accurate later on once the service had started to dry up. Simpson - 4 - Hardly played. His highlight was the assist against Ipswich. Adebola - 5 - I thought he was OK when he played but Barmby didn't rate him and never played again once he took over. Cullen - 5 - Made the odd sub appearance ahead of other options but will be disappointed he was only ever thrown on when needing a goal Pearson and Barmby both 7 as managers.
Mannone up to 8 for me - he was indeed shaky but he usually made up for it with a string of fantastic saves.
