Following our indifferent start to the campaign, I thought it would be interesting to compare our results this season so far to our results from last season against the same opposition.

Due to the relegation and promotion of six teams, I have tried to keep it as fair as possible by matching teams with their equivalents from each year. Given this year's opening games and the fact that all promoted teams have started well, this is quite difficult, but the best I could achieve is as follows.

    2010/11..................2011/12

    Queens Park Rangers......West Ham United
    Norwich City.............Southampton
    Swansea City.............Birmingham City
Preston North End........Brighton and Hove Albion
    Sheffield United.........Blackpool
    Scun thorpe United.......Peterborough United

So far we are 13 games into the campaign, claiming 15 points in the process. Following the rule of achieving one point for every game played to remain in a division, we are at least keeping our heads above water. However, with the experience in our squad, many fans feel we have so far underperformed, at least until the departure of Steve Cotterill.

In these thirteen games we have played two of both the promoted and relegated teams, obtaining only three points, with one win (Blackpool) and three losses (West Ham, Brighton, Peterborough). This is particularly disappointing when noting that three of these games were played at Fratton Park.

Taking all 13 games into account, and using the team pairings above, our comparative results are as follows:

    Opponent........................2010/11....2011/12

    Middlesbrough...............A.....2-2........2-2..
    Brighton and Hove Albion....H.....1-1........0-1..
    Reading.....................H.....1-1........1-0..
    Bristol City................A.....2-1........0-0..
    Cardiff City................H.....0-2........1-1..
    West Ham United.............A.....2-0........4-3..
    Hull City...................A.....1-2........1-0..
    Blackpool...................H.....1-0........1-0..
    Peterborough United.........H.....2-0........2-3..
    Leeds United................A.....3-3........1-0..
    Barnsley....................H.....1-0........2-0..
    Ipswich Town................A.....0-2........1-0..
    Doncaster Rovers............H.....2-3........3-1..

Comparing these results as a table, we get the following:

    Season...G...W...D...L...GS...GC...GD...Pts

    2010/11..13..5...4...4...18...17...1....19
    2011/12..13..4...3...6...15...15...0....15

(This will vary depending upon how you pair the relegated/promoted teams, but in the end we will still play all six)

So, when compared, we are slightly behind last year's results, notably not helped by the fact that we have yet to win on the road. We have also yet to go into half time with a lead.

However, despite losing six already this term, we have only ever lost by a single goal. Following our last three performances, hopefully things are starting to improve.

When viewed that way, it doesn't look so good. I feel, however, we have had some fair degree of misfortune, this year and your last para, bears this out somewhat.

I think our team has started to gel, it has been quite evident that some players did not get on with SC as much as SC had let on!

We obvisouly had a few dubious results earlier in the season, but with 2 wins in the last 3, against opposition we should be beating (no offence to Barnsley and Donny), things are looking up.

Although, the next three games are going to a test for us. Derby and CP away and then Cotterill back at FP. I would be happy with 4 points from these three games I think - any more is a bonus considering Derby and CP's form at present.

I will be gunning for 3 points against forest - people might say "well SC knows the players so he has advantage" - well obvisouly SC never played 4-4-2 or with Rocha in defence so here is hoping SC will be surprised with our line up - I also think the Ginger Ninja and Rocha will be gunning for the 3 points more than anyone considering their animosity towards SC.

I have to agree with the expectation of four points from the next three games - I would be nice to get something on the road for a change (I think I'm right in saying we haven't won away from home since beating Leicester in March last season....?)

As you say, at least we have beaten a couple of teams that we should be more than capable of winning against. We all know that on paper, our team should be able to compete with most others in this league but, as Leicester have proven, it's not always that easy.

The Championship is a funny old league.....Every season, without fail, it cannot be predicted!

I think some of our neighbours are surprised they have a healthy lead in first place, Norwich were the surprise of last year also!

The gulf between the prem and the champ is now smaller than ever in my eyes.

I think a draw at either Pride Park or Selhurst Park is all we can wish for - any more will be a massive bonus - but out of the next three games, a win against Forest is the MUST WIN!
