Later today the first yearling by Sea the Stars will come under the hammer at the JHRA sale in Japan. The colt, out of Starlight Dreams, is a half-brother to Mastercraftsman. The sale will also see the first yearlings by Conduit and first foals by Harbinger offered for sale. The first major European yearlings sale, Arqanaâs Deauville August yearling sale, will also see several Sea the Stars yearlings go under the hammer. In honour of the great horse, Arqana are launching a website dedicated to the sale of this exciting first crop, see more here. The website goes live on Wednesday morning.
The Sea the Stars sold for Y40,000,000 (about £325,000) to a Japanese buyer. The yearling session was topped by a Deep Impact colt, sold for Y250,000,000 (about £2,030,000). Foals sell tomorrow. It is a funny sale as the foals are all still unweaned. They are shown with their mothers then return to their breeder until they are weaned (August/September) before being sent on to the new owner.
Will I be responsible for insuring the foal(s) prior to them coming here? By the way, thanks for not including Harbinger in the heading; don't want to push the prices up.
There are 20 foals by Harbinger catalogued, most of them out of Japanese raced mares. Brilliant. Can't wait to show these to my wife and daughter. One stood out for me but I'll wait to see what they say. Difficult to find the pedigree for these (only checked the first few) because the names aren't unique. Do you have the unique names? The dam's sire and the sire of the dam's dam would be fantastic but if I had the unique name of dam or a link to the catalogue I could find those myself. I had better not let them know about the Deauville sale; it's only 90 mins drive.
Ron, I've now added the link up to the pedigrees for each foal. The vast majority are out of Japanese mares, so it is difficult to make much of the race records as they operate their own pattern system. What we would acknowledge as Group Races are listed as G1, G2 G3, etc. Japanese "pattern" races are JPN3, JPN2, JPN1 which means they are not good enough to be considered Group races by the rest of the world. If you want a sneaky peak at the Deauville sale, you can find the catalogue here
Fascinating viewing PN. They look a decent bunch overall from what I saw. Which one caught your eye Ron?
You are a GEM Princess. Just had a quick look through the pedigrees. The one I liked from the videos has the sort of pedigree I like too.
Why would anyone pay £2m for a young'un? Obviously they can afford it but what is the thinking behind paying so much and what makes that particular lot stand out so much to bring such a price? I remember some years back, late 80's possibly that a horse i stand to be corrected was it Warshaan? went for around $2m and was only a bit above average on the track.
Right. Amanda and I have looked at the videos independently and selected independently (ie neither having any idea of the other's selection(s) My first choice was Lot No 305 My second choice was Lot No 477 Amanda's first choice was Lot No 477 Amanda's second choice was Lot No 305 My wife hasn't seen the videos yet and doesn't know which one's we have chosen. Amanda also liked the very late foal Lot 393
I recall one going for 10million guineas/dollars (can't remember the currency) and I don't think it reached a race track. If it did it never won.
Snaafi Dancer i think it was Ron. Could of even been having fertility problems as well at stud if memory serves.
Don't forget the recent case of The Green Monkey - sold for $16million at the Fasig-Tipton Breeze Up Sale to Coolmore. Raced three times, failing to win. Now standing at stud in Florida (having been sold again) for the princely sum of $2,500 per covering! From what I remember, he was an extremely good looking 2yo and did his breeze for the sale in an astonishing time for such a young horse. People will usually pay large sums of money for a colt because they hope he will be good enough to go to stud and earn mega millions. Doesn't always work out that way though!
