When the Return of Mares was published last November, I posted a thread on here. In that thread I listed the book of 140 mares first covered by SEA THE STARS in 2010 and the foals they subsequently produced.

I've now been back through that list to update additional foals that were late registrations, names, sale prices, etc.

You can see the original thread (which contained details as to who owned the foals and the race/produce records of their dams) here.

As the various yearling sales take place (Keeneland commencing tonight) I will update this list with sale prices and changes in ownership.

You will see that some of the horses pass through the sale ring twice, once as a foal and again as a yearling. This is referred to as “pin-hooking” (a US term relating to the old tobacco trade I am told), where someone buys a foal and sells it on as a yearling to try and turn a quick profit.

Where "No Return" is listed it is reasonable, at this stage, to assume that the mare failed to produce a viable foal.

Enjoy!

Over 20 that did not get to yearling stage either by mare barren, aborting etc. PN iss that a "normal/average" figure, it sounds a lot to me

Yes, I'd say that is a normal figure. You expect a stallion with good fertility to get 80% of his mares in foal, you can't account for issues with the mare herself.

Updated with the latest sales figures. As it stands, Sea the Stars is averaging £240,000 for his yearlings, a good return on a stud fee of (approx) £70,000.

Hi PN i was told there is no such thing as a stupid question? in my case there might be!

Is he limited to 140 mares during the season or was he over or under subscribed?
Who picks the mares?
How long does he work for?
Is there only a certain part of the year he can work as thats when the mares are ready?

18. BORDIGHERA (USA) – filly (28 Apr in IRE) WONDERSTRUCK (IRE)

'Wonderstruck' thats a winners name!

Regards

GGW - the dam is called YUMMY MUMMY, her colt hasn't been named yet!

Ardent, in answer to your questions:

The stud will have picked a number of mares to limit him to. They will have taken into account that this was his first season and not wanted to over face him and also they will have been conscious not to "flood the market" with his offspring. I'd say without a doubt that mares were turned away.

The mares themselves will have been approved by the stud and the stallion owner's manager. Mare owners will have looked at their own mares to decide which would be best suited to STS and then made an application to the stud. The stud will then look at the mare's credentials and select those that they think will give him the best chance of getting good offspring.

The covering season runs from 15 February to 15 July each year. The vast majority of mares will be covered in March/April because no one wants a late foal (gestation period of 11 months) - as every Thoroughbred's birthday is 1st January of the year in which they were born, people tend to want as early a foal as possible.
The stallions are carefully managed so that they do not cover more than 4, or sometimes 5, mares in a day. Obviously the workload is dependent on how many mares are in season at a given time, so one day he may only have 1 mare and the next 4!

Hope that clarifies a few things!

Thanks PN ...I suppose the next question is how do they decide what mares blood lines suit and what's unattractive to them. Do the look at past results? Do they ever just take a punt? Or is it strictly scientific? If Frankel covers Black Caviar that's just a punt isn't it, there will be no science behind that mating?

Yummy Mummy has an awful name but a wonderful pedigree, as she's a full sister to Fame and Glory.
Her Sea the Stars colt has an interesting pedigree as there's so much German blood through Urban Sea(StS's mum) being half German, and Gryada (Yummy Mummy's mum) being half German. Should be tough if nothing else.

Yes, they are the 2yos of 2013.

In terms of selecting the stallion for a mare, the owner will look at her pedigree and how that sits with the stallion’s pedigree – you don’t want to replicate anything too close, so for example Ouija Board will never visit Sea the Stars as they are both by Cape Cross.
For an unproven stallion they will look at what are called “nicks” which is evidence of one bloodline working well against another. The owner would probably, in this case, look at Cape Cross (STS sire) and see what kind of mares he gets his best results with. They can also look at Galileo, as he is a maternal half-brother and may provide some indication – it would be interesting to see how many Danehill mares were sent to Sea the Stars, seeing as the Galileo/Danehill cross has been so potent. It would result in inbreeding to Danzig (Danzig is the sire of Danehill and is also the great-grandsire of Sea the Stars through his sire Cape Cross and his sire Green Desert, a son of Danzig)

The owner will also look at her race record, depending on what they are trying to breed the owner may want to send a staying mare to a sprinting stallion to try and inject a bit of speed into the bloodline, or send a sprinting mare to a staying stallion in the hope of getting a 1m4f horse.

Things like conformation will also be taken into account – if the mare is small they may send her to a larger stallion to try and gain a bit more size in the foal; if the mare has crooked knees they will look at sending her to a stallion with very good knees to try and breed out the fault, etc.

It’s all a matter of a balance of the above, and also the stallion’s fee will play a part. It is all well and good if your mare has a pedigree that suits Sea the Stars, but it’s not much good if you can’t afford his price!

At some point in the near future I will redo the list in alphabetical order by name of horse and start adding trainers, as and when I can.
