Whilst the Europey cup is crap, I'm not sure that adding more teams to the Champions League is the answer. The potential to finish Seventh and still qualify for Europe's premier competition waters it down too much and is hardly the stuff of champions. One idea that I quite like though if it were to happen, would be to ditch the group stages and have a straight round robin knock out competition. Teams are drawn at random and play each other over two legs home and away. If this were to happen I think they should also change the name and simply call it the European Cup. Thoughts ?
Well that's the point really. For a team finishing seventh, which at the moment is distinctly average it would have greater rewards than winning the FA cup. Personally, I think they should reward the FA cup winner with a champions league place and limit qualification to the top three.
1. Calling it the "Champions League" is ridiculous already. Fourth place is not a champion (despite what Wenger thinks). Rename it the "European Cup" no matter what happens. 2. Keep the groups. The groups guarantee we'll see our team in at least 6 European matches, and they add an extra importance/dimension to the games. 3. Disband the Europa league. It's worth nothing to be the best of the "almost good enough". 4. Increase the European Cup to include up to 5 teams from a country (7 is way too many). 5. Bring back the Cup Winners Cup specifically for Cup winners, and make it a knockout tournament (like a Cup is...).
I agree with that, don't know why they don't already. Winning the FA Cup should only come second to winning the league in domestic competitions in terms of achievement.
If you had a cup winners cup and five teams in the Champions League - or European cup, then the top five would still qualify for it. I think that's too many. I agree that finishing fourth is a generous admission to the comp, even though we've benefited from it. I think the top three should qualify and the FA cup winner and Europa league should be scrapped altogether.
the competition is called champions league .. meaning a league of champions .. how is 4th or 3rd a champion let alone 7th? the name is already wrong imo , so European Cup could be better two legs home and away is really better option, but in condition, the clubs should be divided into 4 pots lower clubs at pot 4 start first, then joined by those in pot 3, then later on joined by 16 clubs from pot 2 in last 32 and then in last 16 winners will be joined by 8 elite clubs from pot1 .. I think that will keep the best till last ensuring quality of CL and producing still many thrilling games from creme de la creme
The 64 teams idea is bloody terrible. I personally think the CL is fine as it is. Giving the Europa League winners a place in the CL would help improve that competition.
I agree, not even finishing 2nd accurately describes 'champions' either. I think the 'European Cup' would be a much better name.
