Gut-busting burger challenge defeats food-lover David

A food lover who used to scoff an 18-inch pizza and chicken pakora BEFORE his dinner faced his biggest eating challenge yet.

David Lauder Jnr was up for the task when he saw the whopping five-pound Outback Burger Challenge at his local chippy, The Sherwood in Renfrew.

But after chomping his way through almost half of the monster meat challenge, he had to admit defeat.

Inchinnan man David, 42, said: âI used to be 18-and-a -half stone and eat an 18-inch pizza and pakora before I started my tea.

âI was in the chippy getting a supper and they said they had this challenge for the day so I thought Iâd have a go.

âIâve lost loads of weight over the last few years but Iâve still got a big appetite and enjoy my food. I eat all the time.

âI watch the programme Man vs Food where the American guy does food challenges so I was up for it. But I could only manage half.

âI ate about a quarter of it in 10 minutes but there was so much cheese on it which made it harder.

âI felt really bunged up afterwards, I couldnât eat anything for 24 hours.â

The Outback Burger Challenge is the brainchild of David Colquhoun, manager of Meat at Muirs butchers in Elderslie.

He came up with the idea after a customer said he could eat five of his half-pound Outback burgers.

âThatâs where it all came from,â he explained. âWe use five burgers so thereâs two and a half pounds of meat, just under a pound of bacon, onions, cheese sauce, cheese slices and the bun weighs about a pound as well.

âWe get the burger buns specially made by Ferriers.

âWe make the burgers to order, it takes us about 20 minutes to make one up.

âThe burger itself is made with pure steak mince so thereâs less fat in it and itâs a wholemeal roll. Itâs a healthy version â if you could call it that!â

Meat at Muirs sells the Outback Burger Challenge in its takeaway and the Sherwood chippy is also planning to start offering it.

Eating challenges originated in US where TV shows like Man vs Food have made it an entertainment form. Meat at Muirs screens the hit programme â where host Adam Richman travels around the US taking on the mammoth food tasks â to encourage people to give their own version a go.

Gavin said: âWeâve been doing the eating challenge in the shop for about four months now. If you can finish the burger in 45 minutes, we give it to you for free.

âAbout 60 folk have tried - but no-one has managed it yet. The most people have got through is about three-quarters.

âWeâve not advertised it, people have just found out through word of mouth.

âIt costs Â£15 to buy, which is little over what it costs us to make.â

He added: âThe list of losers is up on the window at the front of the shop â but there are no winners yet!â
