Former Manchester United assistant manager and mister 'Wally with a Brolly' Steve McClaren has resigned as FC Twente manager this morning.
The 51 year old McClaren was under heavy pressure after the team didn't manage to scrape in a single win so far in league games in 2013. After 5 draws and a 2-1 loss against SC Heerenveen this weekend the second term manager handed in his contract for termination which FC Twente accepted.

McClaren: 'The club is bigger than me and has a place in my heart in mind and I do not want to stand in the way of progress for the club. So I am resigning so the club can move on. There was a huge amount of pressure on the club, me and the players to perform, and the fans' criticism only increased it. I talked with the board about my position and about guarantees for the future, but the club couldn't give me those in these precarious times. So I drew my conclusions and decided that it was time to step down.'

This was McClaren's second term at FC Twente, in 2010 he managed to win the Eredivisie Title but left the club to be a manager in the Bundesliga at VFL Wolfsburg. He was fired in February 2011 at Wolfsburg and returned to England in the summer to Nottingham Forest. After a couple of weeks he left Nottingham and in 2012 he returned to FC Twente to replace Co Adriaanse in December. Steve McClaren now leaves the club whilst being in fifth position on the league table. Unable to make an impression in the domestic league and the Europa League, where they drew a group in which they should have advanced to the next round but failed to do so, and an early knock out in the Dutch FA cup in December 2012.

FC Twente have not appointed a new manager, training and coaching will be done by Alfred Schreuder assisted by Youri Mulder and Boudewijn Pahlplatz.
