    http://www.theguardian.com/football...les-criticises-manchester-united-wayne-rooney

Scholes went on: “There’s a chance he’s worn out. Wayne’s peak may have been a lot younger than what we’d expect of footballers traditionally. Age 28 or 29 has been the normal ‘peak’. With Wayne, it could have been when he scored 27 league goals in 2011-12 when he was 26.”

Is Wayne really worth 300k a week? Why did Moyes do this?

Didn't Chelsea want him last summer before he turned you down.

    Over £300per week.
    Almost £16mill a year.
    Almost £64mill over a 4 year contract...

... for someone "over the hill"? Better hope not- or Moyes is going to have to watch out for assassins in the night.

    (and in wine bars)

    Yes we did.
And if the thread was entitled, Chelsea: Rooney is past his best, I could see the relevance.

It seems that people in this thread havent read it properly.
You dont understand that LOECW isnt saying Rooney is past it right?
Paul Scholes said it.....you know that ginger guy who used to play for you, the best midfielder you have had in recent memory....

Since when has 28-29 been a players peak, I'd say it's younger than that for attacking players. Defenders and goalkeepers can go on longer though.

Rooney was a better player when he was 21 than he is now, though that's JMO

I thought it was a given that his peak has gone. Hardly a controversial opinion.

These things are immaterial. As a United supporter I only care about what Rooney brings to the team. He's never going to be a player who single-handedly carries the team - never has never will be, and this season more than any other typifies that. HOWEVER, put him in a team of quality players and Rooney will shine. That is why the rebuild is almost necessary for him and also why United need to keep him.

Btw Rooney is a perfect individual example of why England as a team, fail to deliver. As with most of our players their failings are masked in the prem by the quality around them, and exposed when you take those players away. Rooney for United in the Prem this season is an acute version of most of our players for England in an International.
