Saturday is going to be very emotional. There is going to be a special programme with proceeds going to charity. There are also going to be hymn sheet's for the hymn
Bread of Heaven. I'm sure we will all do Gary proud.

  2. I loved Gary Speed, but as harsh as this sounds, my mind is more focused on the game tbh. Sorry.

HMT howay man! The game is still going ahead so don't worry about that! but the importance if the game pales into insignificance when you think about what happened to Speedo, have a bit if respect.

If anything I think the atmosphere will be improved by the fans passion and love for Speed - so this should hopefully help us get a result on the pitch.

I'm pretty sure we'll remember Speedo like any great who passes through our club. He certainly deserves it and I'm sure he'd appreciate a win as much as anything else given how driven he was to get them in his career. Class act.

Your right, it does sound harsh.

He doesn't agree, he's more interested in the game than a mere pre match tribute which he may think pales into insignificance given the circumstances too. Nothing wrong with him thinking that and it doesn't mean he doesn't have any respect for Speed.

Also... Your mind is focused on the game... Eh? You're not playing in it, you're just watching it for your enjoyment/entertainment. I'm sure you can spare a few thoughts for speedo and still enjoy the game so get over yourself

WTF, well if you're 'more focussed on the game' go and make some formation porn then and stop making pointless insensitive posts in here <doh>

Besides, an emotionally-charged atmosphere might give the players that extra few percent, not that they really need it with the ethic Pardew has instilled. I think Shola should get a sub appearance in this one, he'll be fired up.

I heard all the plans for Saturday on SSN and I was like <yikes>.

Props to the club, they could of easily just gone for a minute silence but they've gone one step further.

I am **** at hyms though...

This forum has its fair share of morality police doesn't it? If HMT is more interested in the game then so be it. Why on earth that means his opinion is 'pointless' and means he needs to 'get over himself' I have no idea.

At the risk of being lynched, I can't help but feel that this is one of the rare situations in modern times where a minutes silence feels far more appropriate than the minutes applause/eleven minutes of chanting etc. I know its to honour his contribution to football, but I'm just really uneasy of applauding someone who has just taken his own life and left behind a wife and two kids. I know there'll be reasons behind it, and he was obviously not in a good place, but I'm still uneasy about the applause.

I've been a season ticket holder at Newcastle for years, and Speed is definitely on my heroes list (I once wrote to him to see if I could buy the shirt he swapped with Vennegoor of Hesselink when we played PSV, no reply but still up there), but I'm honestly not sure if I'll feel right singing, holding a card (no doubt with Real Radio or Sports Direct on the back) and clapping along, knowing that there are two kids and a wife somewhere to whom football is an afterthought at the moment. I'd feel far better just with a minutes silence and thought, clap at the end and into the game.

    Slowly backs out of thread...

Good point really. While the applause is obviously in regards to his services to football, I'd feel pretty odd clapping while his family are possibly still scratching their heads as to why he did what he did.

You posted something similar on another thread and I agreed there, so I shall do so again.

Heavy Metal Toon - assuming he's the one referred to as 'Tash' - appears to get a really hard time on here off a lot of people for little reason (although I'm fairly new here) but I thought he was way off on this one. There was literally no need to say it, it was totally redundant. Just because we're discussing tributes doesn't mean none of us are interested in the match.

Err... maybe because this is insensitive and some may even see it as offensive?

Anyone who tells me a game is more important than life and death (famous quotes to one side) has to have a serious look at themselves.

If you didn't mind him saying it, fine, obviosuly everyone has their own opinion - but I think if he genuinely believed this he should have not said anything, as it's just innappropriate in the circumstances.

EDIT: and I told him to "get over himself" as he seemed to suggest him 'keeping his mind focused on the game' was actually important... it's not - he's a fan, not a player.
