Hello, pilgrims. Some decent Group and Listed action tomorrow but if my regular readers will allow it I’ll nominate a couple running in valuable handicaps instead.

STARGAZER (3.10 Ascot) – most progressive individual trained by Sir Michael who started the season with an decent success at Sandown Park. Was then off the course for 3 months prior to returning at ‘Glorious’ Gooders and running a race full of promise as he stayed on in a most eye-catching manner to go down by just 2 heads. The important thing to note from that race is that it was over 10 furlongs and tomorrow Stargazer steps up to 12 which should benefit him enormously, and I do mean enormously. Must say that I think this horse has the capabilities to be a Group class performer in time and despite being raised to 99, here, think he can oblige of the morrow before taking the next step up.

COSMEAPOLITAN (5.05 Haydock Park) – like Stargazer this is another most progressive individual and he had by regular readers Ebullient with a capital ‘E’ when he won The Derby at Newbury (of the Ladies variety) last time by 10 lengths. Has been raised 10 lbs for that but 90 still looks workable for an old boy who is currently doing nothing, I say nothing, but improve. This will be much tougher than Newbury but I think Cosmeapolitan can continue to progress with a victory here. However, win, lose or draw tomorrow later in the Autumn this horse is going to make a smashing juvenile hurdler and could go to the very top in this sphere. Get him in your notebook, people.

    Good luck all.

Agree totally on Stargazer. Stoute ofte runs big improvers in that Sandown handicap (trainers are beasts of habit). Last year he ran Stargazers's ill-fated brother Stravagante (looked as if he'd go to the top before breaking his leg at Royal Ascot in KE VII, for which he was favourite) and Dartmouth. So like you I see this as a step to Group class.

I think Callender 9/4 is the one they have to beat in the nursery up at Navan at 3.50. He's been well touted since his debut and this step back in class should see a winning run I hope. Unless Red Sabor has improved an unprecedented amount, Callender holds him well on past form, Velveteen is tricky to assess, still quite babyish when I seen him run earlier in the season but he's capable and he's the one I think will give the selection most to worry about. I'd be surprised if the others troubled the judge here and Callender rates a sound bet for me.

Best of luck with your selections as usual <ok>

    15.30 Haydock- SUEGIOO- 25/1 ew

Dropping back in to handicap company in over a year and although he hasn't won since the Chester Cup in 2014 he has been mixing it in some very decent staying company since, probably slightly out his depth and although running off top weight, has a very good jockey on board taking off a handy 5lbs and should be very competitive in not the strongest field!

    16.30 Haydock- LIMATO- 9/4

Basically if he runs he wins, best 6f sprinter this year and last year (except for the beast Muharaar)
Annihilated the field in the July Cup and was just unlucky to run in to one too good over 5f. But connections would not have thought about it lightly and will pay off

I wish I could find a link to the piece I was reading the other day where some weather Muppet was predicting an Indian Summer in September. Did he mean a monsoon?

If the forecast for Saturday is even remotely reliable, Limato has to be the worst bet on the card at Haydock but his chief rival The Tin Man does not want it wet either. The only one I could fancy in any of the earlier races is Montataire but at the skinny odds I would wait until five minutes before the race to see how much the ground has eased before considering it. Cunco has no chance on form with the Johnston colt and Frankuus may turn out to be the inadvertent pacemaker.

So with Ascot the only place to look for decent flat ground, I have come up with two hat-trick seekers:

At York last time, FIRMAMENT came home in front of a big field in a competitive handicap over a mile. The obvious risk is the drop to a stiff seven furlongs from the flat eight but whilst this is numerically competitive (2:40) many of the opposition are lacking in good recent form. Although raised 6lb for last time, I think he is improving enough to see off Von Blucher, Dutch Law and Suzi’s Connoisseur.

MUSTALLIB has been raised 7lb for victory in a seemingly moderate heat at Leicester last time but this lightly-raced son of Iffraaj can find the necessary improvement to continue his winning streak in the 4:10 as he receives weight from his principal older rivals Kadrizzi and Solar Flair.

I am not sure that I would be in a rush to pile on Stargazer as his last win was off a significantly lower mark and Dal Harraild and Real Dominion have had less punishment from the handicapper.

Can anyone shed a little light on WALPOLE? Think he has been pulled out of his last couple of intended runs including yesterday at Ascot. I did back him yesterday so money back and now I see he is running up at Haydock today. Want to back him again today. Cheers.

Gordon Lord Bryon is just too huge @ 33/1 in the 4 30 Haydock to not back e/w. Like the look of Dancing Star too.

    Anyway onto the main business,

Have received 3 bits of info today, MikMak in the 3 55 Thirsk (20/1), Restraint of Trade in the 5 00 Thirsk (20/1) and Stake Acclaim in the 5 20 @ Ascot (8/1).

I'm doing singles and e/w doubles and trebles and all that crap.

Stake Acclaim is expected to win, flying at home apparently and expected to win this comfortably, Winston also goes straight from Kempton to Ascot to ride it, has an hour to get there lol. But i'd still errr on the side of caution as Ivory and Winston are bang out of form at the moment, Winstons riding **** think his confidence is low ( See Tagula night last night as an example ) and Ivory's horses are going through that bad patch he usually goes through, don't usually pick up form until around october. But he does still have the odd winner. He has 5 out today, so i'd imagine he will manage 1 winner, 2 if he's lucky so hopefully this is the right one and the info is right.

MikMak has always been thought of as better than this, been contesting better races and only finished 2nd to hornsby by a neck a couple of runs back and at 20/1 is a huge price, but it is a tough race with the hugo horse and the fav. But 20/1, great e/w value nonetheless and will hopefully win.

Restraint of Trade was pretty short and sweet, it was just a text saying get on Restraint today, expected to win for Jennie and Connor, blew the cobwebs away few weeks back and its now purposely dropped down a few grades to resume winning ways. And another huge price at 20/1

So yeh, best of luck lads and hopefully a profitable day for us all!

    From Hugo Palmer's Betfair Column
    15:30 Haydock - Walpole

We also declared him for Ascot on Friday partly because we weren't sure of getting into this race at the time - and I wasn't at all sure that 1m4f on drying ground would have suited him at Ascot, so we took him out - but fortunately we were the last one in here.

My assessment of his form clearly stands from last weekend, where we withdrew him from Newmarket on account of the firm ground. I think we got away with it on fast ground over 1m4f at Thirsk last time, so hopefully he has more to offer here, and he will need to, off a 5lb higher mark in a much stronger race.

But, as I've said before, he is a big and immature type, so he certainly should continue to improve physically, and I'd like to think he remains on a workable mark and hopefully it is genuinely good ground on Saturday, which he will enjoy.

I am also looking forward to seeing him over this longer trip, too, as I think that will suit, as well. As such a big horse, he may feel like he isrunning loose off 8st 6lb, and he won his bumper on softish jumping ground if they get a lot of rain.

    Good Luck <ok>

Navan 4.20-Crocodile Shoes goes into hcapp company for the first time off a mark of 87 and should be tough to beat following an impressive win at Rcom a few weeks good.Win bet 5/2.
Haydock 4.30- I expect Quiet Reflection to go very close today especially with some juice in the ground and gaining weight all round. I think she can turn placings with Limato and appeals
as a cracking Ew bet at 11/2.
Best of luck with your waters if your playing.

    16:30 Haydock Park - Donjuan Triumphant e/w

(In the hope that there really will be some forecast rain, this will do for my Saturday punt. Definitely a Group 1 sprinter and has run some good races over 6f when there's cut in the ground. Guess A. Badel must be Alexis Badel, the son of Alain Badel? Good pedigree there).
