Lots of interesting angles in the Derby today beyond the fact it is Frankie's last race. Firstly Military Order, whose full brother Adayar took the race in 2021. Whilst 5 pairs of brothers have won the Derby, the last occurrence was completed by Persimmon (1896) and Diamond Jubilee (1900). Given how the breeding game has expanded since those days it would be close to a statistical miracle if Military Order were to prevail. Talking of breeding, the second interesting angle is that we have a totally unexposed Galileo colt with form figures of 1-1 but he is relatively unfancied at around the 16/1 mark (I assume because he is trained by Ralph Becket rather than Aiden O'Brien). Artistic Star's form to date has been steady, rather than spectacular, and a look at his dam's (Nechita) other progeny - all 4 by Galileo - hardly inspires confidence. Jessie Harrington's Forebearance (highest OR 107) the pick of the family so far. So on to Dettori's mount, Arrest, who stormed up the Chester straight to take the Vase on soft ground. He has a relatively high knee action and one does wonder whether he will be quite so effective on today's surface but he has the maestro in the saddle and will surely be involved at the business end. Good trials for the race over the years have been the 2000 Guineas and the Dante and both races are represented again here. Of the 2000 Guineas runners, Auguste Rodin will have to improve markedly for the step up in trip (but may very well do so) whilst Group 1 Saint-Cloud winner Dubai Mile can certainly be expected to show better back up in trip. Of the Dante runners, Sir Michael Stoute's Passenger could well turn out to be the best horse and he ought to be in the mix too. At the prices though an e/w bet on Artistic Star to continue Galileo's fine record in the race
Really? Don't find it 'fun' at all lately. (In fact, a long break is best for me, think I'll try to show an interest in Ladies' Beach Volleyballl, got it's points, that's for sure) (However, I will watch the good old Derby today at the ridiculous time. Cheerio!)
Auguste Rodin destroyed that weak Derby field today. He will be hard to beat at that distance and more for the next few months you would imagine. Maybe Aidan wasn't telling pork pies after all
