Not original but I do like Queenoftheclyde already won a nursery and was a very good second in a much tougher race at sandown last month and 5/2 does IMO look abit of value

    Have a good day <ok>

Is anyone else have trouble with the ATR website? I'm finding some of the normal navigation routes don't seem to work and no access to replays. Or is it just me.

Marnie James 14/1 and Orvar 25/1 both ew in the Portland. The former is in great form and has had 2 decent placed runs behind Dakota Gold. The latter finished an eye catching 7th beaten less than 2 lengths when not getting the clearest of runs. Good luck everyone and enjoy your week in Turkey Karlos. I'd seek out a non tourist Turkish massage. Brutal but strangely satisfying <laugh>. And then beers.

A very disappointing card at Doncaster with only the Portland featuring more than eight runners. Who would pay their money to go today for fields of 6, 5, 5, 4 and 3? It is a bit like a wet Tuesday at Hexham in February but with more prize money.

It would seem that Frankie thinks his best chance on Saturday is getting the leg up on unbeaten Great Voltiguer winner Logician in the St Leger, but will it be a grey day at Doncaster? His style of racing suggests the extra distance is within his compass.

With only the four starts to his name, he is in the same position as Sir Dragonet, the number one contender for Aidan O’Brien having been given a break since finishing a close fifth in the Derby and then freshened up in the Royal Whip at The Curragh when well beaten at long odds on.

Nayef Road has it to do with the favourite having finished fifth (last) in the Great Voltigeur, thirteen lengths behind the winner who looked to have something to spare at the end. Previously Nayef Road had won the Gordon Stakes. Can he turn around the Knavesmire form over the extra two furlongs?

Technician won the Geoffrey Freer last time on soft ground and won a Listed race at Longchamp on easy ground in June but between those two races he was well behind Nayef Road in the Gordon Stakes on better ground, so perhaps Martyn Meade’s colt just likes to get his toe in.

Sir Ron Preistley has had an excellent season to date winning five of his six starts culminating in the March Stakes where he made all the running. Will Franny Norton be looking to do the same here as there is likely to be competition for the lead from one or more of the Ballydoyle runners?

Dashing Willoughby won the Queen’s Vase on soft ground but subsequently was beaten in the Princess Of Wales’s Stakes on quick ground after making the early running and was well beaten in the Goodwood Cup.

The remaining two contenders cross the Irish Sea with various questions to answer. Western Australia was second last in the Queen’s Vase behind Dashing Willoughby, nearer last than first in the Curragh Cup and last in the Grand Prix de Paris and looks set to be a pacemaker here. Il Paradiso was third in the Lonsdale Cup last time after winning a two mile handicap by a street. There look to be a lot of jumbled form lines there with it seeming that race distance and tactics turn up different results like a big field of veteran sprinters.

This does all look set up for Khalid Abdullah’s Frankel colt; and it seems apparent that Sir Dragonet has been trained with this in mind. If Sir Dragonet fails to get home, Il Paradiso could surprise.

Interesting to see a couple of St Leger defectors running at Leopardstown instead. Barbados, second in the Queen’s Vase, contests the handicap at 2:30 off top weight, whilst Norway runs in the 3:40 where Moore has gone for Mount Everest, not seen since chasing home Japan last term at Naas.

The Matron Stakes (5:25) looks like a match between last year’s winner Laurens and the dual Guineas winner Hermosa. I am still of the opinion that Skitter Scatter has not trained on as she was beaten in a moderate Group 3 at Tipperary last time by a listed-class filly. Joseph O’Brien’s Iridessa has been inconsistent and his father’s I Can Fly really only has place claims. Forgiving Hermosa’s woeful effort last time, I still think that she may come off second best to Karl Burke’s battle-hardened filly.

On known form, the Irish Champion (4:15) should be going to Magical. Her Royal Ascot conqueror has been retired injured and she has chased home Enable twice since and this is clearly her optimum trip. The Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck has failed to win since and drops two furlongs here whilst close-up Epsom runner-up Madhmoon prepped with a Group 3 win over a mile. Headman comes here with two moderate French Group 2s to his name and clearly needs to keep improving to challenge. Deirdre caused an upset in the Nassau and is likely to be coming late again here but Madhmoon is likely to adopt similar tactics and my suspicion is that ELARQAM may already have flown by then. Mark Johnston has built him up since Royal Ascot with a narrow listed win, a comfortable Group 2 win at York and then a close third behind Japan and Crystal Ocean in the Juddmonte. Today is his day in the sun if he does not fluff his lines. Just wish Dane O’Neill was on board...

In the Portland the unbeaten Bielsa is too short for me at 5/1. He's inexperienced and only won a head last time despite the claims by some that it was a cosy win. Up 6 lbs now in a tough race he is priced as if big improvement in pretty much guaranteed, rather than being possible.

A Momentofmadness won this last year making all and somehow comes here for the double attempt on a 4 lbs lower mark. Some horses seem to be anchored by the handicapper for years with little respite while others are dropped pretty quickly and A Momentofmadness has gone down the Handicap 9 lbs since the end of April. Easy to argue a case for him after a decent run at York last time and on the same mark today. His odds are cramped now though.

Plenty of horses who like to make the running here, so could they cut each others throats out in front?

I felt getting big odds was paramount here and decided to give my Stewards Cup pick Arecibo another chance. He never got involved behind Khaadem at Goodwood but has placed in his other 4 runs straddling that below par effort and his 3rd to Dakota Gold looks a good effort. He was held up that day and could come from a strong pace today to be involved in the finish. William Hill offer 7 places each-way but are tighter at 22/1. For that reason it was a visit to Ladbrokes and five places only but a big looking 33/1 price.

Obviously a hugely competitive race but I am banking on the O'Meara horse coming through late to fill a place in the first five home.

1.50 Doncaster Arecibo 33/1 EW places 1,2,3,4,5 (Ladbrokes BOG)
