Sorry if there has already been a thread, but I've scanned the forum and can't see one..

It was abundantly clear to me after around 15 mins that Santon is head and shoulders above either of our 'first choice' full backs Simpson and Raylor.

The lad is in a different class.

If Pardew drops him back to the bench (as he seems to be doing quite a lot with HBA, another player who should be an automatic choice), then I really am baffled with what he sees out there.

    What's your thoughts?

Regarding Ben Arfa, at 3-2 that game was crying out for him, yet he brings on the honest, yet limited Sammy.

Two potential world class players being kept out by mediocrity. Can't get my head around it.

He looked very comfortable on the ball and appears to be a good dribbler as well. Defensively I didn't see anything that really caught my eye although he didn't make any mistakes.

    A good debut <ok>

Santon is good but he is a right back, we really need a left back.

Pardew mentioned in his post-match interview with Sky that we have to be careful with Davide. Looks like he's carrying a 'niggle' and can't be risked against Swansea

I don't know why Benny didn't start against Norwich. His skill and dribbling ability would have worried the back-four of Norwich. Santon looked good but i would prefer him at right- back, hopefully he's fit for the Swansea game if he is carrying a slight knock. Ben Arfa needs to start behind Ba aswell IMO.

In an ideal world we'd get Pieters to play left back and Santon right back.

(I think he's out with a serious injury at the moment, so just the sort we'd look at signing on the cheap :emoticon-0102-bigsm)

But Santon's played left back for Inter, in the Champions league. So that's good enough to convince me he can do a job there for now.

My guess about HBA is that he displayed a bit of attitude and Pardew has dropped him to show who's running the show.

With Shola in his current form, it's not that much of a loss

Actually I expect the thing with HBA was probably that the game was too physical for him. There wasn't that much football on the floor. Against Swansea though, that shouldn't be an issue - any team with Wayne Routledge in it is not going to be looking to punt the ball about (although we did try at times).

Pardew must have brought Shola in to help with defending set pieces.

    It didn't work.

I think pards went for shola instead of HBA purely because of sholas height and presence in the box from set pieces.

The only time HBA has been in our area he conceded a silly penalty...

I wasn't that impressed with him myself, good going forward but anonymous defensively. He is only 20 though and if he's like that already it looks good for the future.
