..... until I read the comments by Sol Campbell." "I played right back that day against Sunderland," Campbell recalls, "and every time I touched the ball – monkey chants. Every single time. Whole sections of the crowd doing monkey chants." To be truthful and factual, I made all that up of course ........ just like Campbell did I've no idea whether the sad liar's comments will have any effect but Sunderland should consider legal action imo. Repeating things like this has a horrible way of becoming 'a fact' in some people's tiny minds.
iirc a local journo tore into him and showed him up on telly a couple of weeks ago. Can`t remember who it was.
Nowadays, the accusation of racism is far more damaging than being victim of racism. There is nothing wrong in being different, their is absolutely something wrong with prejudice because of it. Playing the race card is as bad if not worse these days.
Every single time. Whole sections of the crowd doing monkey chants." Abssaloutely he was telling lies
there are some stupid people who do that at safc games though, i remember the northampton league cup game probs a fair few years ago now where it went to penners, i was young and in the north stand so went right behind the goal was right at the front at the barriers squashed in and every northampton penalty taker was black and there was quite a few young kids making monkey noises, was and still is one of my worst moments as a safc fan
its them fans that make me not want to go to them home cup games the young chavs giving it the biggin thinking they are class and trying to sing all the songs thinking they are hard and going to be casuals im sure most of you know the people im talking about coming on the cheap tickets yer it gets the crowd up, is a small minority and i havt heard anything like that since mind you
I can remember being at Bradford in around 1998. Think we won 4-0. Anyway at that match there were chants and pretty much the whole crowd sang them. "I'd rather be a packi than a mag" and "you're just a town full of packis'" amongst others. I found that pretty embarrassing.
They win the Darwin award outright, it just humiliates themselves. they should be painted black to see what it feels like, and no offense or joke intended. I have never heard any racist comments at the stadium of light myself in 16 out of 17 as a season card holder just the mags/Shearer and the ref getting abuse oh and Barton when he comes back with QPR !.
I was at that game and it was by no means the whole crowd that sang those songs. In fact I remember an awful lot of people shacking their heads in dismay and others calling people next to them that were singing idiots etc..
Sadly it happens in just about every sport worldwide, although it's only a small minority like many have said it's an embarrassment to the club and fans of any team.. Would be great if these individuals were single out and banned from games from there respective clubs, I know from memory that has happened at a Chelsea game I think? But it would be good for our club to have members who hear it during a game doing something about with the powers to be..
The daft thing about that was that it was 99% white in the ground so the insult wasn't even targeted at Asians, just a thoughtless dig. Another popular song that day was, "I'd rather be a Muppet than a Mag!" Neither particularly based on racial on puppet based discrimination. I was there and the end was packed, looking back it wasn't clever. You have to remember though, this was the time when Warren Mitchell was on the BBC trotting out a weekly tirade of crude insults at any foreigner you could shake a stick at ....... there was also the Black & White Minstrels & Love thy Neighbour which 'encouraged' racial insults. No excuse but that was a long time ago and people have changed for the better.
PHP: The 70's and most of the 80's was a bad time for black players and my admiration for their struggle is beyond words. By the time Campbell came along though, there were black players at every club, earning fortunes and the crowds applause in equal measure. Black players played for England and at our club, a certain Gary Bennett became a legendary figure, captaining our club along the way. He was and still remains a fantastic ambassador to both football and our club and his colour is a secondary factor. He's just a decent footballer and a top class bloke. Pity then that Campbell the obsessed bell end attempts to rewrite an untruthful history and neglects to mention Benno as one if the all time loved footballers at SAFC. He is as blinkered as the imbecilic biggots who still monkey chant at the SOL. The difference is we abhore them and vilify them and above all point them out to be expelled. I tend to ignore everything Campbell says these days due to his pathetic obsession with his invented, persecuted state, which is a great pity because he probably has much to offer football if only he wasn't such an embarrassing manipulator of the truth.
I am often told that the North East in general is a racist part of the country. Either I have been exceptionally lucky or my sources are trotting out bull ****. I suspect it is the latter! Not once have I encountered anything racist, be it at St James', nights out in Newcastle or even in my time in Sunderland and Durham. Sure there is probably the odd bell end but they make up a tiny, tiny minority of the general population. What happened in the 70's and 80's happened everywhere. Society has moved on. So should everyone else!
It must be the case that if it's true that he was directly influenced by Campbell's statement, or personal advice, the club must surely have grounds for a civil action on the grounds of detrimental effect to trade
Mags accused of mass uncivilised behaviour, "Scum, worst fans in the world." Mackems accused of mass uncivilised behaviour, "Lying bassa."
I agree have never experienced racism in my life, the odd light humoured joke but nothing nasty! (this forum aside, of course)
