Pardew speaking well here. Looks like he is having a discreet dig at Sammy... effectively telling him to keep performing before a new contract is considered....... wonder if Alan has learned from the experience with Shola where he would only turn it on near contract renewal time?

I think Pardew's approach is right here. If Sammy is consistent he'll get a deal I'm sure.

On Alnwick apparently saggy chops is sniffing around him... expect a car window interview on the subject very soon from the melty faced one...

ALAN Pardew says Newcastle United prepared to take a gamble on Sammy Ameobi’s contractual situation.

Ameobi is out of contract next summer – and free to talk to clubs next month about a move.

But the club is yet to table a new deal – despite the forward’s impressive form.

Ameobi is been playing for his future at St James’s Park – and United manager Pardew feels his “hunger” for a deal is behind his recent performances.

The 22-year-old – who had looked set to leave the club at the end of his deal before breaking into the side in late October – has been a regular starter for Newcastle, who face Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in the Premier League tomorrow.

Goalkeeper Jak Alnwick – who will be in goal with Tim Krul and Rob Elliot sidelined through injury – is also in the last year of his deal.

“Sammy’s in the same situation as Jak, althought he’s turned the tables a bit for himself,” said Pardew.

“That hunger is sometimes a good hunger – let’s hope he continues on that path.”

Pardew, however, has conceded that holding back on a deal is a risky business for United, who have previously protected their interests in young players by handing them long contracts.

“We take risks all the time with contracts,” added Pardew.

“You give kids five year contracts like Haris (Vuckic) has got, for example, and sometimes you make calls either way.

“Sometimes you make those calls because of the personality of the player.

“I think Sammy having his contract up at the end of the year is a good thing for him. It keeps him hungry.”

Alnwick, meanwhile, is set to play the next “six to eight” games, with Elliot sidelined until the New Year and Krul not expected to return until mid-January.

The 21-year-old came off the bench against Chelsea and made a series of saves as Jose Mourinho’s side laid seige to United’s goal.

On Alnwick, Pardew said: “Robbie will be out for six to eight games, so it’s a great opportunity fo Jak and he’s very keen to take it.

“He’s had a great start and has fitted in very well.

“He has worked very hard in the background, but never had an opportunity

“I have great faith in him, but he will need a lot of luck as well, particularly in that crucial position. He deserves a bit of luck, because he is a cracking lad, and I’m very proud of him. “

I'd award both a contract personally. 2 or 3 years.

    Definitely.

At the moment the squad isn't good enough to keep Sammy out of the match day squad - and not just because of injuries, I think he's there on merit.

And Alnwick is absolutely worth holding onto. He may even push himself ahead of Elliot over the next few weeks. In fact, I hope he does.

Hmmm.... sounds exaclty how Shola's time went with us - started playing well when contract was due, got a contract, went ****e! Repeat and rinse!

Yes but I genuinely think Sammy has more to offer than Shola - and if he weren't Shola's brother then he wouldn't be associated with this type of comment any more than our other youngsters would be.

Then again, I might be misguided and he might be just like his big bro. <laugh>

Let's give him a contract anyway, always fun to have an Ameobi in the match day squad for the derbies.

Come on lads, we all know Sammy will be here until 2030. He's not at all bad and he should develop further given his age and the first team exposure he's been getting. Alnwick has the job interview of a lifetime coming up, the pressure to perform is most definitely on. It's actually a perfect opportunity for the club, where without the crisis we could have been at risk of letting a future star go or handing an undeserved contract to an also-ran. I personally hope that in the same way Krul leapfrogged Harper when he got the chance, so Alnwick will jump above Elliot in the pecking order (but only if he's actually any good!).

Agree. It is certainly a huge opportunity for him to prove it!

Sammy has come on leaps and bounds this season and imo deserves a further contract.
We have to take a chance or two on players like him.
Besides it wouldnt be the same without an Ameobi at the club.
If he can stay long enough, hopefully Sholas Son can be the next to take on the mantle of the Toons greatest Dynasty.

For me Alnwick hasn't done anything yet to deserve another contract. With Darlow coming in, to be second choice keeper next season (probably), I cant see him staying anyway unless he gets assurances that he wouldn't be third choice anymore. Cant see that unless both Krul and Elliot were to go.

Sammy has been great recently. I think he just wants to stay with us. I think its the right approach. Keep the form up and you will get the reward.
