I only ever thought of the 'golly' as a 'fun figure' ( as opposed to a 'figure of fun.') The smile they wore brought a little bit of brightness into the day ! - rathe than people going around with doom & gloom all over their faces. It may interest you to know that I have some dear friends whose skin colour easily matches that of the golly on the jars. These people are beautiful. I love them for their 'colour' from within their skin.

When I look at a golly on a jar - I do not see a depiction of a person of a 'certain' skin colour. I see an 'innocent' smiling face...... Of course, the same could have been achieved using a different skin tone ---There is absolutely NO racist type thought in my head - or am I not allowed to say that I enjoyed the jolly countenance of a piece of advertising ? -----and I was careful in not offensively using the term 'wog' when I referred to the golly on the jars.
