Not sure whether the club really has got a steadfast salary cap but does anyone else think that if we do it might cause a few issues with transfers in the summer?

Wasn't the reason Seb Larsson didn't come in January was because we couldn't agree personal terms with him i.e. He wanted more money than we were prepared to offer It was also a big part of why Andy left also.

I know a few people think that Newcastle will use some of the money received for Carroll to go on wages rather than transfer fees but I'm not convinced of this. The club publicly said it wanted to work towards being self sufficient in a few years. Using transfer fees to pay wages is not a self sufficient business model.

I feel this will mean us buying young potential talent who would accept lower wages (the Ben Arfa's of this world). It will also mean losing players to teams who are prepared to pay higher wages. Although I'm not sure how this new UEFA rule might effect things (when does that come into effect?)

All I'm saying is gone are the days when we could attract players with known quality by offer high wages. Not that is all bad(Owen anyone?)

What are your expectations this summer in terms of the type of player we can attract?

Our cap is 50k a week and Birmingham pulled out of the Larsson deal after everything had been agreed.

Using transfer money to fund wages definitely isn't a sustainable business model, I agree. But that's why I think this wage cap is a good idea for our club at this point in time. We seem to be in a rebuilding stage after the last 3-4 years (maybe even longer) and as wages are the biggest outlay any club has it makes sense to keep control of them until we can be sure of top 10 finishes and the extra revenue that comes with it.

As for the players we can attract, £50k is not a shabby salary, even in the Premiership, so I reckon we can still attract the right sort of players

We want players to play for NUFC not just their wages. If they accept 50k (still a good wage) we know they are here for the cause and not just the ££.

This & this. If they aren't willing to play for us for £50,000 a week they can **** off. The only teams in the PL who would pay better are Spurs, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea & the two Manchester teams.

If we need to offer above the salary cap just offer large bonus to our big money buys that means they need to perform to get the money

The problem with this is that in a couple of years we will be paying millions out for just winning a game or keeping a clean sheet. Its stupid that they get appearance bonus'! That's like us getting extra pay just for turning up to work! Its a joke of a system. I agree with something like, if a striker reaches 25 goals then they get a fair whack or a massive amount of assists and clean sheets (but only for a large amount, not every game). Also winning a cup competition should give a payout of course.

To be honest most other bonus' are stupid. The appearance one really winds me up (repeated I know but I'm still ranting)...

    Rant over.

In terms of the salary cap, I think it's a great thing, we don't want to be paying players too much money just to come here; ala Luque. We can still attract good enough player to push us up the Premiership.
