Also why would Davide choose Liverpool when we will be finishing above them consistently in the coming seasons. I hope he has seen the DVD

Haven't seen this posted anywhere else yet, but our Italian transfers cheerleader has just posted this:-

Tancredi Palmeri ‏@tancredipalmeri
Southampton in the race for Coutinho: Inter has been contacted and in the talk was mentioned a possible offer of 12m €

I'm slightly more inclined to believe there is something to this rumour now.

If Palmeri nails both Astori and Coutinho, it's safe to say that he's a wizard.

Physicality would be a problem for him in the Prem, as would the need to track back (assuming he'd see much of his time on the wing), but if we're looking for attacking players on the same wavelength as Gaston, he certainly fits the bill.

Like to believe it, but am wondering if we are now so well known for hunting in Italy that we get named as one of the 'usual suspects'. Just as Arsenal are always said to be interested if we have a new young star. It always seems to be the same price...we want to pay 10 mill euros and the chairmen seem to want 12 mill.

Sky have repeated the story that Liverpool have lost out to us for Astori (just a repetition of what is in the Italian papers). I suspect we have to go in high to see off 'more attractive' clubs.

Cortese has some influential contacts, probably agents, in Italy. If it were a level playing field, the players probably would choose Liverpool, so I suspect we have some sort of way in. What we pay Gaston is hefty by our standards, but by those of Liverpool, they're fairly modest. I dread to think how much Suarez and Gerrard are on. If they want to waste their money on cack like Sturridge, then that's their lookout.

Can't see Coutinho been true.

Astori deal definitely has some legs.

But we don't need anymore attacking threats for now.

We can score goals, we just can't keep many out of our net.

There's nothing particularly interesting about our 'way in', with Ramirez we simply paid closer to the asking price than anyone else did. If our offer is the only one the club accepts then that puts us in a good position to negotiate with the player.

Absolutely love this quote from the Guardian:-

Liverpool have offered Serie A side Cagliari £7m for defending's Davide Astori, according to the Daily Mail, but as things stand look likely to miss out on the 25-year-old because Southampton have outbid them. The same paper reports that Manchester City have offered Napoli £45m for Uruguayan adonis Edinson Cavani; only time will tell whether or not the Premier League champions' bid is torpedoed by a superior offer from the south coast club.

At least one media outlet have a sense of humour about us splashing the cash about.

The player still has to agree terms, which Gaston did quite swiftly a considerable time before we agreed a fee with that pain in the arse Bologna chairman. From the sounds of this, we've got Astori eating out of our hand, but negotiating with Cagliari is proving the hard bit. Having the player firmly on our side scores the competition away. The amount of time Cortese devoted to the Gaston negotiations, he wouldn't be happy if Gaston decided he didn't want to sign. Like the other clubs, Cortese wouldn't have got involved if he wasn't confident of landing his man.

Coutinho I believe plays more in the middle, Morgan and Cork work well but are sometimes guilty of letting our attack stall by not releasing the ball quickly enough. We really need a player like Wiltshere who is always probing with passes and always pushing attacks forward, we would suffer defensively with Coutinho but going forward we would improve no end

I'm not actually a massive Coutinho fan. Looks too lightweight in the Italian league, so heaven knows how he'd cope here.

Is that not what Ramirez does though?

Serie A is a ****ing strong league tbf. Most of their top teams would beat the top teams in the PL with ease.

So we haven't got worse since Lallana has been injured?, With no really back up for him I would say we have.

Southampton are set to trump Liverpool in the race to sign Italian international defender Davide Astori. The Reds have reportedly offered around £7.5m to land the Cagliari centre back, but the Serie A side’s valuation of the player is in the region of £12m and will, therefore, be more likely to accept Saints’ £9.5m bid.
