Astori's agent, Renzo Contratto was in Hampshire yesterday. He met both Cortese and Adkins in a meeting at the Four Seasons Hotel. *

* - Sorry for my poor local knowledge, what with not living in Hampshire. Someone may know where that is??

Sounds about right, it's near Farnborough, a real nice Spa hotel. I had a conference there once and it is ridiculously plush, obviously trying to sway the agent.

Suppose it's one way of doing it... Always pictured Nicola doing his 'negotiations' in dark and dank Butcher's basements.

Weird, I always pictured it taking place by the fireside in grand decorated armchairs with Nicola stroking his pure white cat, dressed in his finest silk gown and designer slippers.

With Nicola periodically picking up the poker while speaking very deliberately about the need for talks to come to a prompt conclusion, before giving a sharp stab to the burning logs as a ball of fur leaps to safety.

How about like the chairman from that sketch on The Armstrong and Miller Show?

On twitter today Cagliari centre back Davide Astori is set to join Southampton FC, as a fee has already been agreed between the two clubs. And also Hoovield is set to move this transfer window if the deal for Astori goes through.

Hooiveld won't be going anywhere.

If Fonte is crocked I can't see them letting Hoover go in a hurry, he may not be Premier class but he is better than nothing and always does his best.

That wouldn't make sense unless we promote Stephens or Martin to 4th choice, otherwise we'd be left with 3 again? Wouldn't begrudge him a move though cracking fella and a fan favourite.

But we don't know what other deals Saints have going. Could be the plan is to bring in two CB's so Hooiveld might be superfluous. Admittedly, Fonte's injury might change those plans somewhat.

Feel a bit bad for Hooiveld. He was very good for us last season, and I think he's been unfortunate in having a bad patch at the wrong time, and playing against the tougher opponents and some bad riccochets/bounces. On the other hand, hard to argue the defense doesn't need strengthening or that Astori isn't a class above anyone Saints have at present.

Can't see us letting Hooiveld go really. He was really unlucky with the start he had, I don't expect him to be that bad again.

Frankly any rumour that starts "on twitter today" can be disregarded.

I cannot see us selling anyone this month who we know could do a top job for us in Championship - just in case the worst was to happen come May.

Hooiveld, like Sharp and Richardson and Fox, can do a top job for us in the Championship.

SFC will not be thinking Championship....its not NC and NA style.

Hooifeld and Fox will be kept till end of season.....Richardson 3rd pick at RB at best, Sharp on loan......Saints will sell with right offers.

I understand where you're coming from, but I am tempted to disagree.

Cortese has always come across to me as someone who is prudent and has a plan B. Of course he will want nothing else but survivial this season, but I've long had the feeling that he will want to make sure that we have the best possible chance of coming straight back up should the worst happen.
