Incredible that they released him 18 months ago and are now paying £6m to get him back.

A few other players have gone through similar, Jordi Alba and Fabregas spring to mind with Barcelona letting them go for pennies then paying millions to get them back, but I can't think of a time when the turnaround has been so quick!

I don't think they wanted him to leave, his contract was running out and he was after first team football.

With Liverpool apparently shelling out 18m on a combination of Sturidge and Ince, and this having not been able to afford Dempsey last summer, I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that they will be looking to offload players in January to raise some funds. They are also heavily linked with a number of top centre backs around europe.

With Agger and Skrtel the centre back partnership of choice and Carragher seemingly the prefered back up, would a bid for Coates be worth considering? I know he would cost a pretty penny and is highly sort after but we do have an Uruguayan connection, we can offer him first team football and he is exactly the sort of centre back we need.

Clutching at straws a bit but that's what these rumour sites are for!!

Re:Ince - a compensation was agreed between Liverpool and Blackpool when he went there because of his age (even though his contract was ending). That might well have included first option to buy back or even a fixed buy back price. I've only seen him play 4/5 times but he looks very much like a Brendan Rodgers type of player so no surprises there for me.

I wasn't the case that they couldn't afford him, they just weren't willing to offer more than 2 mill for some reason. Liverpool don't need to sell in order to buy.

I think they'd be keen to keep Coates to be honest, Agger and Skrtel are good ages but Carragher's not getting any younger.

Nah, we got J Rod we don't need Hooper as well. He's missed the bus I'm afraid!

Lescott's wages would be an issue; a loan would be brilliant, can't really see it though.

Where it's ok to disagree….

[h=2]Usmanov talks about Arsenal, Left back ‘heavily tipped’ to join us & Champions League Draw today…[/h]According to the local newspaper in Southampton, Luke Shaw is “heavily tipped” to leave the club in January and his expected destination is Arsenal. This story has been rumbling since the summer and it wouldn’t surprise me if this turn out to be true.
Having just tied down five British players to long-term contracts, Wenger seems keen to add Luke Shaw to this list. Rumour is we have had scouts watching him but then again, so have Chelsea but surely a player of his age would rather join a club which doesn’t swap its manager every five minutes and play under a manager who would give play him and not just pay him?
I doubt Kieran Gibbs would mind a bit of healthy competition and our current left-back does struggle with his fitness but the bigger bonus would be that should this rumour become true it will surely spell the end of Santos…

Deluded or what!Think they have been on the bottle for Christmas early. Wenger can sod off!

Luke Shaw is going nowhere until the end of the season at the very least. Cortese should slap a £30mill price tag on him.

Classic piece of Echo doublespeak as well, "the 17-year-old could be the subject of intense transfer window speculation", when what it actually means is "I, Adam Leitch, will will make the 17 year old the subject of intense transfer window speculation, in order to trick you into buying my newspaper and reading my website by pretending to have real things to tell you".
