Spurs' Dawson is £7.5m target for struggling Southampton Southampton hope Tottenham and England centre-half Michael Dawson is the man to fix the Premier League’s worst defence. Dawson has been told he is not part of manager Andre Villas-Boas’ plans at Spurs, and is free to leave in the January transfer window. Saints have conceded a worrying 24 goals in just eight Premier League matches - setting a new eight-game record for the Prem era - and boss Nigel Adkins is keen to boost his paper-thin defence with a £7.5million move for Dawson. The 28-year-old remains a target for QPR, who came close to signing him in the summer, but free-spending Southampton can match the wages they are offering. Chairman Nicola Cortese has already attracted a big-name signing this season in Uruguayan Gaston Ramirez from Bologna for £11m. Ex-Nottingham Forest star Dawson has made just three appearances for Spurs this campaign, and played only ONE minute in the Premier League. Adkins, whose side were thumped 4-1 at West Ham on Saturday, admitted: “Individually some players are getting found out.” Would gladly have him, I really rate him - but really cannot see it happening. DTLW
I said this on the other thread earlier on today, apparently we are after Ogbonna as well. I was told we did try and sign him in August and had a 12.5 mil bid accepted. He was willing to come to us but his club back tracked at the last minute and we went on to buy Yoshida instead
Won't happen. Also £7.5m seems like an awful lot when you consider how much we've spent already this season.
Cortese is following GOM advice. However wil fall through and we will get someone from Celtic reserves instead
I saw this today on Twitter.., I'm very skeptical though. What wages would he realistically be asking for?
"Individually some players are getting found out" - did he really say that?? Like everyone else, I'd take Dawson but can't really see it.
I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that he was asking for 80k a week off QPR which is what caused the deal to collapse, might have just been bollocks in some tabloid though. Much like this is
I guess a lot of it depends on how determined Cortese is that we stay up. How much his financial plan for Saints relies on staying up, because to ensure that security now, he's going to have to buy it. I just struggle to see if it was that vital why didn't we invest more heavily in the summer in the positions we needed. What does worry me though is if we spend big again in the New Year and go down anyway, how would that affect the clubs finances? Would the parachute payments be enough to keep us stable?
Adkins has spent a lot of money already. Depends whether they are willing to give him much more to spend and what sort of financial backing we really have.
I thought it was around 50,000. Still 15,000 more than our top earners but I think NC has been stung by our bad start and will go after bigger names, but nothing can be done for 10 weeks or so, but its good to start looking now
I think it could happen. I mean, not specifically Dawson (though I wouldn't mind having him at that price). But I think Saints will be willing to spend 7.5 million on a player like that. It wouldn't even surprise me if they bought two at that price. And they should be able to find a pretty good CB for that kind of money. Let's just hope they get the right players.
It's completely out of context. What he said was "Individually some players are maybe getting found out a little bit, but it's a collective thing at this club. We've all got to stick together and we've all got to work hard. That's the important thing. You've got to keep a resolve and a belief because when your mistakes get highlighted you start to lose a bit of confidence. We've got to keep the players believing in themselves."
You can be confident but at the same time not good enough , I think its obvious we dont have a defence sufficient for this League .
We will be linked with every defender from now on, because we are leaking goals. Just paper talk, but I'm sure we will be in for a one or two defenders in January (loan or purchase). In answer to question whether Cortese will put us at financial risk to avoid relegation...the answer is no. He will spend a calculated amount. We would still be valuable as a stable club back in the Championship.
