http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1365844-10-great-goals-in-southamptons-history Just spotted this on Newsnow. Some great goals but I'm not sure I agree that they are the best in our history? Still just enjoy!
Any PL goals (apart from Jos own goals) will be good...even rubbish ones as long as they lead to points.
It misses one of our other best goals, which is the overhead kick from Danny Wallace against Liverpool in the 80's. It started with a tackle outside our area by Mark Wright. It does however include our two greatest goals: the Channon one against Liverpool and the Bobby Stokes shinner against United.
Pahars at Old Trafford? I recalled that recently on the Beefy's Corner thread and Joe put up a video. Loved that moment.
Marian Pahars was the first Latvian to play in the PL...have there been any others since? Oh and cheers for posting this Lamballana!
Didn't his mate play for us in the Prem? I know he came on in the FA Cup, but not sure about the league.
Kaspars Gorkss is currently in the PL, Igors Stepanovs used to play for Arsenal, and we once had Imants Bleidelis who Wikipedia reliably informs me did actually play. That's all I can recall, there may be a few others...
Although the article admits they may not be the 10 best goals Saints have ever scored, they're not even the 10 best Saints goals on Youtube. Nevertheless, good fun. Agree with the article on what should have been the best Premier League goal too. Mind you, even another goal - the Rory Delap overhead shows how to properly connect with the ball. None of that shanking that Rooney was guilty of. Talking about team goals, is everyone going to quietly forget the 26-pass goal against Middlesbrough..? Apart from BBC South Today, I think practically the entire media missed that one, because nobody mentions it, and it shows up as relatively ordinary if it is just shown from where Rickie takes the ball, whereas as we know that Boro were punch drunk after getting nowhere near the ball.
Jason Dodd scoring a goal direct from a corner in Saints vs Pompy 2003 has to worth a mention in a great goals thread It was superb even if a bit of a fluke.
I remember Ken Moncow vollying it in from the edge of the area, only for the ref (Rennie) to dissallow it because of some push or something. One of my favourite goals that never was
Sadly, it was given as an own goal, but we all know it's Jason's goal. The rules on what is given as an own goal and what is given to the player who produces the shot are so wildly interpreted, it leaves me befuddled. My understanding is that if the ball had remained untouched and would have headed into the goal [never mind whether the keeper would have saved it], then the goal stands to the striker of the ball. If the ball would have missed the goal [e.g. Riise's shot deflected by Jos the other week] but is deflected into the goal, then it is an own goal. I explain that last bit out in full because there is a caveat to that, and that is if a superstar striker, such as Wayne Rooney, strikes the ball anywhere near the goal [it may even be heading away from it] and it finds its way into the goal through a miraculous deflection, that goal is awarded to the superstar striker [aka Wayne Rooney]. Of course, they meant it all the time, so that's why the goal is awarded to them.
Undoubtedly the very best Youtube supported Saints non-goal ever not-scored. Even Keegan says it was his best ever disallowed goal, by some margin. Strange how KK was never considered to be a player of great skill and technique [really, he wasn't] because this requires superb Le Tissieresque technique, and you can't get better than that. Found it! Ipswich in the FA Cup.
Agree with this 100%. If a slight deflection from a defender which doesn't change the course of the ball to any extent is given as an o.g. then why isn't any shot which the goalkeeper gets a hand to, but fails to stop going in the net?
