Well we cant have two Ron's. Rumours everywhere that Ron wants Vlaar. Lets hope there is some truth in this one.
Messed up the thread title! Either way I'm not too keen on this. Vlaar is decent but he'll be well overpriced because of a good World Cup. Villa fans want to cash in because he's suddenly overrated and he's only got a couple of years left in him. I'd not throw a pissy but it'd hardly be a good Lovren replacement.
A couple of solid years whilst Turnbull/Stephens come through? Depends on the price but I wouldnt be unhappy.
I said from the very start that I'd not be excited. Yes, a great World Cup but he didn't impress me in a villa shirt.
I must be the exception then. If our Dutch manager, being one of the all time great central defenders, wants to sign a Dutch CB hot from a cracking World Cup campaign, then that's something I do find exciting.
I would be happy. He isn't quick but I think he's very solid. At he's a Dutchman that we know can perform well in the EPL
I'll back him, but when there was a rumour before the World Cup about Vlaar, I immediately thought that I'd not seen him have a good season with villa last year over 38 PL games. Yes, he had a good World Cup over 6 games, but players often raise their game in those circumstances... ... Unless they are English.
Not sure how it can possibly be seen as exciting? Pleasing, okay, but I can't see a single reason to be giddy about it.
I'm cautiously optimistic. Lest we forget, Villa are in a bit of turmoil and to be fair to Vlaar, that was a **** team he played in last year. http://www.whoscored.com/Articles/9...Focus-Ron-Vlaar-Villas-Most-Invaluable-Player Some positive data here, I think he'll certainly be a positive signing at CB. Is he better than Lovren? No, but I don't expect he will be our only signing for that position and he's certainly an improvement on Jos, Yoshida and possible Fonte.
He has been pretty injury prone for Villa too I'd be disappointed if we went for someone based on a decent world cup and playing a different role than he would at Saints
Dejan missed more games for us last year. He must be injury prone too. Not to mention that Rodriguez, what a skiver!
Addendum to that, saying that he is injury prone doesn't exactly bear weight. Aside from two years missed at Feyenoord after cruciate surgery and then resulting infections and complications from treatment, he has regularly played 32 league games a year. If we can have him available for 32 games and we sign another "1st choice" CB then I think he's a solid option. Reliable, not insane, experienced and would provide a great foil for young CBs in the first team like Stephens or Turnbull. Plus, how high could the fee be with Villa the way they are and with a year left on his contract?
As long as Vlaar is to replace Lovren and then we go out and buy another top CB which we said we needed last season to replace Jos or Maya as we were horrible exposed when either Fonte or Lovren were injured
Admittedly I shouldn't be considered anyone's source for Villa news but if he only missed 6 games last year, how many injuries were there? Just a quick bit of clicking about shows me that there were other, more highly rated CBs in the Premiership who played considerably less games last year. As I said, I'm certain he would not be our only signing in that position. It was clear to all that we needed another player there last season, losing Lovren means we need 2, minimum.
Would be surprised if it is under 10m I'm not against Vlaar as I can't think of anyone we can realistically get who is much better, just don't think he is particularly exciting.
