Even if he isn't a natural striker, I think the 20m fee suggests he will be our primary transfer this window and that if we do bring in a natural striker, it will likely be only a loan deal.

I don't understand this deal at all as he is not what we need. We need a goalscorer badly.

Perhaps all these players who can play on the left side of attack mean A.Armstrong will be moved on in the window and we will still have a slot for a striker - perhaps a late loan. It's not impossible that Ings comes back although I don't see how he fits in a lone striker system as that is what he struggles with at Villa (apparently)

It's always tricky to try and find a permanent striker in the January window without getting absolutely fleeced. Even Man United haven't even attempted it.

Those on saintsweb are wailing for Chris Wood. Seriously? For what we'd have to pay for him.

Also it is worth considering who we have scouted and brought in or tried to bring in. We were heavily linked with Goncalo Ramos in the summer and his numbers were not good (for an out and out forward, which Jackson is not) until this season where he set off like a train. Indeed that was probably why we didn't get him. If he'd had started the season with a 1 goal in 5 or 6 games record we might have got him (to howls of derision I expect)

Adams has good hold up play, so maybe Jones wants to have direct wingers working off him with JWP as the 10?

From listening to TSP it sounds like he wants to be able to shift to a back 3 with wing backs during h the E game which is why Djenepo / Ely have started. If that is at all the case then the above orthodox 4-2-3-1 seems like an optimistic expectation

All that said - if we are still playing Ely after signing Aribo, Jackson, Edozie, Orsic and Alcaraz then something really isn’t right

 

On the above - the signings of all those players point towards the end of Stuart Armstrong at our club. Especially with his injury issues. And quite possibly Adam as well (unless we go down where I assume he will be invaluable)

 

Upgrading our forward wide positions means more chances ... for Che or Adam to miss (while hopefully the new striker to score, or more likely to score Ings)

 

Clearly Saints Wanna Be Starting Something with this transfer.

 

I'd be very surprised if we got Jackson and a striker.
