It is almost a bit pointless to have Saint xxxx threads only when the deal is all but done. All we really do is confirm the details, say "good" or "bad" then move on. I always thought it was for ongoing sagas such as Gaston/Gakpo/O'Rieley when we know we are interested and it is no longer just a rumour. Then that leaves the transfer rumour thread for all the stories that just pop up every day, for both Saints and other clubs.

This, exactly.

TBF, a lot of our deals are kept quiet by the club so most of these threads can only be created when the deal is nearly done anyway (BBD for example). It would become a bit tiring if all became epic Saint Gaston! style threads!

Fair point but it went on much longer than that. It only changed a couple of years back when Tom became mod and unilaterally decided there should be rules around them iirc.
TBH I didn't decide, it was just that Saints have kept their business more private, so naturally the Saint.....! threads tended to be created when the deals were almost done.

The Saint threads were never about waiting until 'likely to sign'. Weird you keep pushing this narrative tbh.
“Narrative”. What the hell? It’s just an opinion. I very clearly stated that “I” wasn’t a fan. If we aren’t allowed opinions on here then we might as well wind this all up and go home.

I just quite liked the idea of labelling people “Saint” when they become Saints. Not actually opposed to separate threads for sagas. Although I’d rather we didn’t have sagas

That said just having the names is what Saintsweb do. And then change the title to add a confirmed when it is. So “Saint” is forum unique i guess. It’s just a bit sad when there is one for a deal that doesn’t happen!

Sorry narrative perhaps the wrong word. I'm not suggesting you can't have an opinion either; I just find it odd that you keep mentioning it like it's something really unusual when it was exactly how it was on here for about a decade.

You definitely made the decision to close a thread because "we've not even had a bid accepted"

No worries. Got a bit triggered by the term “narrative”. And it was the second time I’ve mentioned it but hey ho.

I didn’t realise the change was as recent as it apparently was. Could have sworn it kind of stopped after the “Saint Davide” debacle (when I only read and I don’t think posted). And wasn’t that during the Cortese years ? Clearly it didn’t

If you can point out which one it was I would be grateful because I can't find it and I haven't been a mod all that long.

The clue is in the title 'Transfer rumours' it's open to whatever with a rumometer level from 0% - no ****ing chance to 100% get ****ing in future Saints legend.

Have always enjoyed Saint threads even if they never end up signings. Gives us all something to get excited about and have our undivided attention only to have our hopes crushed at the last minute... just like being a saints fan.

Transfer thread is good for a bit at the start but when you have about 10 news articles being released for the same player over a month it warrents a thread. If papers can print out the trifle they do, why can't we debate how fun/crap signing said player would be on a dedicated page.

Yeah, these pages are good for when there's a bunch of updates and general squad discussion happening on the transfer thread too. As we know, there can be updates from various journalists about multiple players within minutes/hours of each other, so I find these threads far easier when I want to just get up to speed on specific players and what the chat is

Would presumably also mean another DM coming in as trying to play Smallbone there in the event of Downes being unavailable would be suicidal. In fairness so would playing Charles as loan DM in the premier league

Shea Charles definitely isn't ready for prem football not in the way thar Russ would want the DM to play.

I never want to see WS in the 6 again.

I think Sheaf might be too expensive in that 6 role for a back up.
