I have ages ago mentioned this section of the Guardian Newspaper and find the nuggets of information supplied with the implied sarcasm behind it but thought I would post a few of the "nuggets" from recent weeks. It is extremely worrying at times what the people in charge of the "peoples" game say and do.

From 30/08/2014

FA of the week
Stepping up after a tough month: Italy’s FA, completing an inquiry into new president Carlo Tavecchio calling black players “banana eaters”, and ruling it was light-hearted banter. “Having examined reports, exhibits, video and documentation, the panel has decided to close the case.”

• Next month’s two major football family meetings: 1) Sepp hosting the first ever World Summit on Ethics in Sport (“ethics and integrity are essential”); 2) Tavecchio hosting a major new Uefa conference in Rome. Uefa: “The Respect Diversity conference will raise awareness of how to deal with all aspects of racism and discrimination in football … providing a platform to share good practice.”

Meanwhile
Nigeria: FA president Aminu Maigari arrested again – his second since July – days after a fire destroyed all the documents in his FA’s accounts office. Maigari, deposed in July but reinstated after Fifa intervened on his behalf, denies wrongdoing.

Manager news:
Leeds manager Dave Hockaday, sacked a day after describing his life with owner Massimo Cellino: “He’s unbelievably passionate about this club, I’m not just saying it, I mean it. When I have a conversation with the president and we talk about the way forward, that makes me happy. It shows me there’s a future for everybody.”

• Four days before firing Hockaday, Cellino, who went through 36 managers at Cagliari, told local media he’d made a lifestyle change. “It’s too simple to sack him. The squad isn’t finished and that is my fault, so if I fire anyone, I should fire myself, or else I’m a coward. I have to control my ego.”

From 06/09/2014

Family news
Last week’s football family highlights:

Cayman Islands official Canover Watson, a member of Fifa’s internal financial watchdog, arrested on suspicion of corruption and money laundering. Watson denies wrongdoing.

Fine of the week
Uefa – weighing up Legia Warsaw fans displaying an anti-Uefa banner featuring a pig, the Uefa badge and the slogan “Football Doesn’t Matter, Money Does” – and fining them £63,000. Legia fans breached rules on displaying a slogan which was “not fit for a sports event”.

As the saying goes, you just couldn't make it up!!!

Here are a few more "nuggets"

Obscene news

Honduras: Marathon’s Junior Morales, “bewildered” to be sent off for patting an opponent’s bottom . “The officials said it was obscene. How’s it obscene? Obscene would be putting your finger in or patting genitals … and I’m not obscene. Seriously, this could only happen in Honduras.”

Campaigner of the week

Italy’s FA head Carlo Tavecchio: asking Fifa to trial video replays in Serie A. Tavecchio, convicted five times since 1970 for forgery, tax evasion, falsifying records and abuse of office, says he’ll drive a new era of fair play “credibility”.

The week in racism

Last week’s strides:

• Romania – Rapid Bucharest coach Marian Rada clarifying his observation that Chiajna striker Wellington reacted to racist abuse by “crying like a woman”. “I’m sorry if I was misunderstood, especially as I have a black player in my side, who I like very much.”

Denial of the week

China: Shanghai TV anchor Zhou Liang sacked for calling visiting Jiangsu Sainty players “dogs” ahead of their game against Shanghai Shenhua. Zhou denied using the term until a clip emerged of him reading out the team lineup: “No1 is north Jiangsu dog, No2 a north Jiangsu dog, No3 is a north Jiangsu dog from Brazil, No6 is a north Jiangsu dog from Lebanon … No24 is the last north Jiangsu dog.” PPTV: “We sincerely apologise.”

Other news: winning the war on racism

Russia’s FA: looking to send a clear signal over racist abuse aimed by Spartak fans at Hulk – a week after they sent a clear signal to Torpedo fans who abused Christopher Samba by banning him for two games for his “unpleasant” reaction.

• Fifa’s line on Russia’s record when inspectors were assessing their World Cup bid in 2010: a ruling that racism is “not an operational matter ”, and so “not a factor” in the process. Among the incidents: fans flying a “Happy Holocaust ” flag, lynching a toy black monkey and welcoming a new black signing with a “Monkey go home ” banner.

• Also last week: 1) Fans of Bulgaria’s Levski Sofia unveil a banner with a Uefa logo and a slogan: “Say Yes To Racism ”. 2) Italy’s new FA head Carlo “banana eaters” Tavecchio is formally welcomed by Sepp in Zurich, with Uefa’s inquiry into his comments still unresolved. 3) Rapid Bucharest coach Marian Rada reacts after Rapid fans aim racist chants and a banana at Concordia Chiajna’s Wellington, leaving the striker in tears: “Was he crying? Maybe Wellington should have cried because he didn’t score … Maybe a banana just slipped out of someone’s hand in the stands.” Wellington was booked for complaining.

Sorry to highjack your thread Trev, but I don't want to create a new one and this seemed kinda of semi appropriate. I am a bit confused by this article:

http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2014/oct/19/serena-williams-russian-sexist-comments

How were these comments racist and sexist? I thought his querying of their gender would fall under some other "ist" like genderist. This seems more in line with the Caster Semenya questioning. Is Williams not just dilluting the issue by claiming this guy is racist and sexist. I can't really see where she is coming from, I hope she is not working on some perceived undertones.

The bloke is obviously not suitable for holding the positions he does when he is expressing these views. Surely the dickhead must have known that making jokes about such a subject crossed the line of what was acceptable.

Agree it's completely wrong to class it as racist and sexist too. Unless there has been something else lost in the translation meaning his words were even worse.

Mind you, even his apology was a bit of a 'joke':

“I did not want to cause any offence or make fun of any of the sportsmen,” Tarpischev said. “I am sorry that the joke I made, when translated into English, was taken out of the context of a chat show and so much attention has been brought towards it."

She/he really needs taken to task by these race equality groups for diluting their message. As Martina would say, the silence is deafening :D

And here are a few more classics

Advice of the week

Sepp Blatter, on tour in Moscow, sizing up a possible political boycott of Russia 2018: “This is football [not politics]. A boycott never achieves anything and does not have a positive effect. Fifa supports Russia.” Proving his point: a promotional 2018 Fifa video showing the Crimean peninsula as Russian territory. Fifa apologised for any offence.

Other highlights from the launch: 1) Sepp’s explanation of 2018’s new “fairytale glitter” logo: “It unites magic and dreams.” 2) Vladimir Putin on what visiting fans can expect: “We will be hospitable … security will not create any problems or discomfort.” Putin’s proviso, as set out in January: “[Gay people] can feel relaxed here. But please, leave children alone.”

War on racism update

New last week: 1) Uefa reviewing the sanctions they imposed on CSKA Moscow for more racist fan violence – cutting their stadium ban from three games to two, and their fine from €200,000 to €100,000. Last month Michel Platini said Uefa were showing Fifa the way. “With Uefa, unlike at the World Cup, zero tolerance really is put into practice.”

2) Russia’s FC Rostov coach Igor Gamula responding to questions over whether he plans to sign Cameroon’s Benoît Angbwa. “We’ve got enough black players, we’ve got six of the things and you want me to sign a seventh?” Among his objections: “We’re playing badly. I think it’s Ebola.”

Legal news

Croatia: Dinamo Zagreb president Zdravko Mamic fined €17,000 for defaming lawyer Ivica Crnic during a 2013 tribunal. The court ruled Mamic’s extended questioning – “Why are you st-st-st-stuttering? Liars stutter. You’re a monster, a creep; you’re not your father’s son, you’re a pathetic mouse” – was “not reasonable”. Mamic: “I meant nothing by it.”
