This is being implemented in Scotland where the rules are slightly different. Does anyone have a good reason for it to not be implemented here? Hypothetically, converting the lower tiers of the three two-tiered stands seems a no brainer to me. Thoughts?
I thought that we should have tried this years ago. Our three standing options are not dangerous. What would we put on the capacity, 3K?
Used to cram about 27500 in when I spent my youth wrapped around a barrier every time we scored! Loved every minute of it though. Bring it back with more barriers. God knows how many were there for the fake ticket hammers game but cracking atmosphere!
With the Scottish proposals capacity wouldnt change, it's a one standing to one seat exchange. Would love to see it back though
I used to like standing but don't think my legs would stand it any more. Do think safe standing should be brought it for those who want to stand.
Remember standing at LR when I was really young couldn't see anything and kept getting pushed around but would love it now. One of my first matches in south africa 90,000 seater stadium must of been over 120,000 people inside when the first goal went the ground was shaking from everyone jumping up and down. Bring back standing english football becoming sterilised for all the international followers and is now missing what made it so popular, real passion. please log in to view this image
They have safe standing in various European countries, especially Germany where it leads to very cheap tickets and fantastic atmosphere. It was a British decision to go all seater, nothing to do with Europe.
It was the key recommendation in the Taylor report following Hillsborough that all stadiums in the top flight had to be all seater and this suits the Premier League argument that stadiums are now family friendly and easier for the police to monitor the crowds.......sadly whilst these 2 organisations maintain that argument it is unlikely that safe standing areas will be introduced despite their success on the continent.
Hillsborough wasn't caused by terracing. No one is suggesting going back to the terraces of old. These are completely safe- in fact safer than what we have now where thousands in just about every ground stand up in seated areas. It allows those who prefer to sit to not have their view impinged by those up and down every time we attack, get a corner etc. I could probably write a whole essay about the benefits of safe standing and cannot think of one single negative apart from the cost of implementing it. Maybe 2-3 weeks wages for SWP.
When you buy a ticket for a seated area you buy a seat for the game. It is your seat. If someone is sitting in your seat you will ask them to move. The capacity is strictly controlled and evenly distributed. With terracing it is not. Movement is not restricted and allows a small minority to wreak havoc and cause danger. You can write all the essays you want, but as someone who has seen hundreds of games from the terrace you will not persuade me that it is safer or more comfortable than seating.
With safe standing you get allocated a spot on the terrace in a designated row just as you do with a seat. It's completely incomparable to old style terracing. There's no more potential to cause danger than with seating. Probably far less in fact.
Your right it is incomparable to old style terracing which the romantics are alluding to; in fact it sounds like a spot without a seat. Thanks all the same but I will stay seated and stand up at half time to stretch the legs.
Which is perfectly fine. I just got the impression you were opposed to any standing in the ground at all.
