I was at the 1st leg at Roker - if I remember rightly it was a pretty poor game, summed up by missing a penalty anarl.

I worked with George Courtney after I retired ( for the first time) mid 1990s and he is complete bell end.
He's so in love with himself it was unbelievable and he defo wasn't a Sunderland fan.

Afraid he didn't, no. Its an urban myth.

The ref in question is George Courtney. I met him at an awards thing in November and spoke to him for a while (cracking bloke).

I asked him how he was allowed to ref that tie if he supported Sunderland, and he started laughing. He supports Spennymoor Town a bit, and that's it. Apparently Gates and Gabbiadini like to go round telling people that he's red and white, but it isn't true.

Shame, coz its a good story that they invented

When I knew him in the 1990s he lived in Spenny moor and as a bloke to have a ten minute chat to be was very affable but to work for/with he was a nightmare, his knowledge of football is immense mind but I'm afraid that didn't make up for all the minuses.

Brilliant game - loved that strip. It's one of the very few that I still own - it doesn't fit anymore but I'm keeping it anyway!!!
