Milk Cup final 85, West, scorer of 3 against Chelsea in the semi-final dropped for the final as we had already sold him to Watford. Unbelievable Jeff. https://www.sunderlandecho.com/spor...rtbreak-and-why-it-took-35-years-heal-2903500
I remember watching it at my grans house and celebrating wildly when we got the penalty. Remember my dad saying "we havnt scored it yet". I've been pessimistic ever since.
There wasn't a single Sunderland supporter, in the stadium, who liked the ginger midget. We went through a night of hell, at Chelsea, only to surrender at Wembley ffs.
Never shat meself so much when they scaled the 12ft high fencing to invade the pitch and charge towards our end. Only for that copper on a white horse to come to our rescue. Think Clive Walker chipped one in over the copper iirc
One of my finest nights tbh mate, I was so fired up no one dared come near me ... ... I backed off a gang of Chelsea single handed, I was actually applauded by Sunderland lads. If I wrote a book about that night people would laugh and think it was made up ... ... I'd had serious bother in previous years and swore, to myself, I'd be a Reiver and I was. I couldn't manage it these days tbh, shame.
i was there in 85 we beat Watford, Spurs and Chelsea (they threw seats at the police but the fence saved us !) away then in the final played crap typical SAFC, beat Norwich 3-1 away as well the previous week loudest ever game since 1973 as well !.
I still remember ****ting myself at Stamford Bridge, and the pure chaos both inside and outside the stadium. And yes that Wembley performance was dire!! At least we beat the Norwich lads in the car park, where I even scored a goal!! lol Bart
Most disappointed I had been as an SAFC fan at that point. Lawrie McMenemy soon taught me that was nothing compared to the misery he would inflict on us. Fast forward to Moyes, Grayson, Coleman, Ross and Parkinson and it seems like halcyon days. Oh to get to a Cup final and ONLY be relegated from the top flight is the stuff of dreams now.
Maja was determined to go and stated that he would not turn up for training if we tried to block it. Damaging as it was, I don't blame the club for that one..
To be fair I would be wanting to find out why a young player who is in the first team want’s to leave that desperately, find out and we will probably be blaming the club.
Its a possibility I remember both he and Honeyman were openly criticised by the crowd first opportunity, maybe some never learn.
I believe that Donald was referring to the online threats and abuse directed at owners and their families that both he and Short have had to endure that makes the club far harder to sell.
