Ramshaw brace puts Ladies on the brink. Oxford United Ladies 2-3 SAFC Ladies Sunderland Ladies are just one win away from promotion and the FA WSL 2 title after a hard-fought victory away at Oxford United Ladies. The Lady Black Cats could be crowned champions next weekend if Doncaster Rovers Belles fail to take all three points at home to Yeovil but a victory in their final game of the season, away to Milwall, would give the Wearsiders a league win on their maiden campaign in the Women’s Super League. The visitors raced into an early two-goal lead after Sophie Williams’ spectacular drive and Keira Ramshaw’s effort but Oxford pulled a goal back before the break through Helen King. After 15 minutes of the second period the hosts were level, King adding her second with a header from a free-kick. It took Sunderland just three minutes to respond, Ramshaw doubling her tally with a powerful drive from inside the area. The vital win leaves Sunderland five points clear at the top with one game remaining, while second-placed Doncaster will play their game in hand next weekend. Sunderland waited just six minutes to break the deadlock when Abbey Holmes’ powerful run forward allowed the full-back to play a cross-field pass into the feet of Williams. The forward skipped past one defender before launching a drive from the left corner of the penalty area into the top right corner of the goal. Oxford almost pulled level shortly afterwards, King meeting a corner at the back-post only for Rachael Laws to make a stunning block from a powerful strike. With thirteen minutes played, Williams released Beth Mead down the right side, the striker racing to the byline before cutting a ball back for Ramshaw to prod home at the first attempt. Sunderland looked in total control and Rachel Furness almost scored a third when her header from a free-kick clipped the post on its way behind. Just two minutes before the break Oxford pulled back an unlikely goal when King was able to meet a corner and prod the ball beyond several defenders and into the back of the net. Sunderland started the second period strongly with Mead forcing Demi Lambourne into a good save but with half an hour to go Oxford levelled when King rose highest to meet a free-kick and direct a header beyond Laws. The Lady Black Cats’ response was almost instant – Beth Mead’s strong run and pass finding Kelly McDougall who was able to feed Ramshaw, the winger driving a powerful effort beyond Lambourne from the edge of the box. Oxford continued to put pressure onto the Sunderland back four who coped superbly and Mead was almost able to give Sunderland breathing space in the last minute when he volley was superbly tipped over by Lambourne. The Wearsiders were able to see the game out and now know that a win over Milwall Lionesses in two weeks’ time would secure the title. SAFC: Laws, Holmes Greenwell, Furness (Kelly), Bannon (C), Sharp, Williams (Bass), Ramshaw (Gutteridge), McDougall, Mead, Joice. Subs not used: Alderson, Wilson, Beer.

Ladies crowned champions Published: 26 October, 2014 by Sunderland AFC Promotion secured with 4-0 win at Millwall. Sunderland AFC Ladies have been promoted to England’s top tier as champions after winning the FA Women’s Super League 2 title in London. The Lady Black Cats secured the title on the final day of their maiden season in the WSL by beating Millwall Lionesses 4-0 at the New Den, putting them out of reach of second-placed Doncaster Rovers Belles. Sunderland will now compete with the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea in FA WSL 1 during the 2015 season. The Wearsiders lifted the trophy after winning 15 of their 18 league games, scoring an impressive 47goals in 18 games, while conceding just 15. SAFC Ladies head coach Claire Robinson said: “We are delighted to have won the FA WSL2 league title at the first attempt. The players and staff have worked hard in training and matches for over a year to make this dream a reality and we could not be happier. “We will take some time to enjoy this moment before the hard work starts all over again as we look to make the next step up to FA Women’s Super League 1.” The league win is the Ladies’ fourth in as many seasons, having won three consecutive FA Women’s Premier League titles prior to obtaining their Women’s Super League license earlier this year. SAFC Ladies team manager Mick Mulhern said: “To achieve promotion in our first season at this level is brilliant and as a club we are all delighted to finally achieve our goal of being able to play in FA WSL1.” “The staff and players have worked tirelessly and deserve the opportunity to compete at the highest level. We know it will be extremely tough but it's a very exciting opportunity for everyone and we will relish the challenge.”
