The truth is that he has never got to grips with European football. Even in 2000-2003 and 2007-09, when his squads were at their strongest, he never dominated the European Cup. 99 and 08 were slightly fortunate if probably deserved wins. When he has built a side specifically for Europe: Veron, RVN, etc: they were smashed by Real twice; and Rooney & Co: smashed by Barca twice. He can't beat the Latins. And he has spent five years and millions building each of these teams to dominate Europe. He has had unlimited time, stability and money to get it right. Imagine how many ECs Jose would have won in 17 attempts with carte blanche to run a club how he wants. Ergo: A good but not great European manager. But the greatest domestic manager ever maybe.
Wasn't the best manager in Scotland when he was with Aberdeen either. Inhertited a winning side from Billy McNeil who had the better win ratio.
On what planet does he have unlimited money? Mourinho had unlimited money at Chelsea and never got anywhere near winning the Champions League.
Exactly how is this relevant to the debate or the thread?? No one is disputing your record on paper but I think it's a fair comment especially when of those 2 wins you were vastly outplayed in one and the other was a 50/50 game you won on a shoot out. The OP is right, Fergie should have achieved more given the facts....and he knows it hence why he wont retire.
Agree, not saying SAF is a bad Euro manager just not great. 2008: he beat a Barca side 17 points off the pace and needed three posts to vanquish a Chelsea side without a manager
In fact of the 4 finals he has overseen, they weren't the better side in any (Our one was pretty even though).
chelsea will never win the european cup unless the putin gives roman some more dodgy oil money from siberia
Bayern should have won that final hands down. 2nd biggest robbery in a C.L final behind only Liverpool 05. Fair play you won but nothing to do with Sir Alex's tactics.
