The gas are going to get their stadium up before us,just shows how much more forward thinking south gloucstershire council are, fair play to them. I'm sure ours will happen one day, when who knows. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-18804137
Why didn't we think of this one.......? ' A proviso that hedgehogs on the site should be safeguarded '.
Good luck to them. Granted, the Gas did a sneaky and stole the Mem from the Rugby Boys but frankly that was stupidity from the rugby club. Whilst an ardent City fan, I have no axe to grind with The Gas and wish them luck. Maybe it will add some impetus to our plight and to have 2 decnt stadia in Bristol would be great. Pretty cool to think that my old "Poly" will be the only university in the country that can play footy at a professional grade stadium. Bit different from when I played there many, many years ago.....
Best of luck to the blue half, in all fairness they have been waiting many a year, at least they are with a forward thinking council, not like the shower we have. By the way if nothing comes of the Ashton Vale fiasco, we may end up sharing with the gas, know that would be interesting, yes.
I have made this statement before. I think a brand new shared ground would be financially better for both teams. It works on Italy, so why not in this country. I know they could never share AG as we could not share their ground but a brand new one where neither team has had the chance to say its theirs is an option. Ground being played on more than once every two weeks, concerts in the summer one lot of staff ensuring both clubs benefit the revenue.
I tell you what it would be a lot easier for me to go to Filton than bemmy to watch city.seriously if a new ground was built for both no problem what so ever on my behalf. Living in south gloc the council is so much forward thinking regards business, than the sham that is Bristol city council.
I am not sure why everyone is blaming the council as they eventually gave the go ahead - the delays since have been caused by the friends of the non existent village green and the not spotted at all toad and the like....
I am obviously out of step with the general concensus,I want Bristol City to have it's own stadium, where we can continue to develop our own RED culture, fund our own future, continue the same feelings for the ground and area that my grandfather, mother,my children,my grandsons and me all have,I love the bloody place and would not give a penny if it was shared with the "gasheads".. Good wishes to them on their own stadium but I don't want to share anything with them, our stadium based in South Bristol will be a winner for BCFC and the rugby boys..
Once the clubs identity and history of being a team based in South Bristol with strong links to Somerset were destroyed in favour of what is not far off a franchise financially a 50/50 split of revenues created would possibly leave the club worse off. The Italian model is far different as club are tenants in council owned grounds. A 33% share after the council and BRFC take their 33%! Could even be less than 33%? That still leaves financing a build, investment comes from? Ashton Vale involves business partners alongside BCFC. A 50/50 split of revenues would make the club less attractive to business partners, a 33% split or less makes the club less attractive again.
Agree 100%, we should be steeping ourselves in South Bristol and its surrounds. work with the community that spawned the club. Work at getting more in now, involve fans, be proud of the roots and show the local populace that this is their club. The Gas will look after themselves, City concentrate on getting things right here.
I'm with you on this one. I thought they granted permission as well. The comment on shared grounds, might not be to everyones taste. It's just in this day and age with clubs going to the wall, plus Cardiff are still losing money with average gates of over 20k shows that bums on seats alone don't save clubs. Yes we might be sharing with the egg chasers but will that be enough to turn 11 million a year loss into a 0 or even profit. Yes some might refuse to share but we also have to be realistic if we want our grand kids to be able watch football. Anyone who has been to places like Coventry have seen what a stadium like theirs looks like with 15k in it which was bigger than our average last year. Was not meant to offend, it's just I was looking at this long term not just for the next decade
The rugby club will be tenants of somebody not co owners. The clubs losses are because its owner chooses to run BCFC 100%+ pasts its generated revenue. 2007 - 08 the losses were nowhere near that amount and the club achieved a play off. It is a choice just like Cardiff, or most of the division. The argument for a new stadium is that it will generate more income than Ashton Gate, rather than sharing that income with one, two or even three parties [non football business partners]. So that is 100% maybe 300% more that needs to be earned to reach incomes already gained. That still leaves financing the build and deciding who owns what between different parties. Co ownership could easily put the club in more disadvantaged position than it is now as the club would have to the the consent to develop the stadium, will not control its future from others and have less money. That is no long term strategy.
If you have thirty odd bought in players and David James in goal the club will still make loss even if gates were 25000.
They have their new ground - one day we will have ours at Ashton Vale - sanity will prevail eventually
Having a ground on a university campus is a fantastic deal for Bristol Rovers, but as a former UWE student I cannot help but feel that they will find a way to ruin things for the Gas.
What you all fail to understand is that winning planning permission for the stadium is the easiest part. The problem will be gaining permission for the Sainsbury's - the 'enabling development' - on the Mem. Remember the problems you had getting permission for first a Tesco and then a Sainsbury's on the site of Ashton Gate? I reckon both stadiums could end up being built at the same time for the start of the 2015/16 season.
One big difference SGC will see the big picture, where BCC do not have the balls to push on with Ashton Vale and see it through.
I cant see Rovers getting through this unless somebody finds a way to finance without selling the Mem as an enabling part of the deal, it is both emotive as an issue regarding "war memorial" and I just cant see another Supermarket getting permission to site there after the Golden hill and Stokes croft fiascos. maybe I'm wrong?
You have a good memory Banksy, I remember the Golden Hill protest I was living in Southmead at the time in the early 90's unless something else has happened since?
Trust me, you don't want to share a Stadium, having a sport played on it every weekend destroys the turf. We have had to cope with sharing with Hull FC and I know it's Rugby, but our pitch is dire. Any Bristol Fans that came to the KC last Season will know! Keep it to yourself or you'll regret it!
