Went to the AEGON classic in Birmingham at the weekend. The event was won by the unseeded Sabine Lisicki from Germany. Lisicki demolished the number 3 and 4 seeds, Peng (China) and Hantuchova (Slovakia) in straight sets in the semi and final respectively.

I was really impressed with Lisicki. She plays in a very attacking, aggressive (and entertaining) manner. And also showed soft deft touches too. Great disguised drop shots and so on.

Lisicki was ranked as high as 23 at the end of 2009 but plummetted to 177 at the end of 2010. From what I can gather she had a number injuries during 2010 which won't have helped her ranking.

Anyway, she is back up to 62 now and is evidently finding some form for the grass court season. Sabine also has wild card for Wimbledon.

Ok. I doubt she will Wimbledon, but it wouldn't surprise me if, with a decent draw, she had a good run. And the top seeds won't want to face her in the early rounds thats for sure.

If you get the chance to watch her, then do so. Sabine is certainly one of the more entertaining players in the women's game.

Into the semis now. Beat Bartholi today, although she did wobble at the end of the second set.

That was an outrageous shout, the lta should sign you up right now! The women's draw has been really unpredictable this year, and I've liked what Lisicki has added to it, as you said she plays a nice mix of hard and soft, and is always varying between the two. Sharapova will be really hard, but I wouldn't rule her out of that one either.
