AN award-winning Premiership football star has been charged with assault after an incident outside a Midland nightclub.

Ryan Shotton, who plays for Stoke City, will appear at the city’s magistrates court next week, charged with assault by beating.

The 23-year-old is accused of attacking a man close to the Pink nightclub in the Hanley area of Stoke-on-Trent on June 24.

It is alleged that the man was punched after an argument in the club, and required stitches for a facial injury.

Vinny Bolina, spokesman for West Midlands Crime Prosecution Service, said: “We can confirm that Ryan Shotton has been charged with assault by beating, and will be appearing at Stoke magistrates court on July 27.”

A Staffordshire Police spokesman added: “A 23-year-old man has been charged with assault following an altercation in Pall Mall, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent. The man, from Newcastle, is due to appear at North Staffordshire Magistrates Court, Fenton, on Friday July 27.

“The alleged incident occurred near to Pink at approximately 2.30am on Sunday June 24.

“Three men were involved in the altercation, one of whom sustained a minor head injury and was treated at the scene by paramedics.

“The third man, aged 22, was arrested and later released without charge.”

Defender Shotton – named Stoke City’s Young Player of the Year last season – is described by the club as strong and quick on the pitch.

Although listed as a centre-half, his 6’ 3” height means he has also been used as a striker.

He has also won a reputation for long throw-ins, rivalling those of team-mate Rory Delap, and the technique was instrumental in both goals as Stoke defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 last season.

I would sak just for being near PINK!

They never learn and whilst its not Stoke's nor TP's fault it appears that we are having more than our fair share of disiplinary issues!

    To be honest guys,
Things like this just make me sick to the stomach... Shotton HAS been charged and it''s YET another BAD day for Stoke City FC.
I don't really rate him that highly anyway... seem's he may think he's a better player than he actually is.
Pulis did nothing but praise him last season.....

Shotton, YOU are ani IDIOT... I hope they nail you IF you are guilty. WE live in the REAL world it seem's you do not.
It would not bother me too much if Pulis did likewise and punished you too! BUT he won't will he?

Pulis for speeding and using a mobile?
Pennant for speeding HOW many times is it?
    Now this.

Waddo, BEST OF LUCK with the new venture mate. <ok> Hope it goes well for you!
