On the pitch - one of the greats. To get to 1000 games (I think he's only the 12th player in history to do so?)is a phenomenal achievement, and his list of honors is just as incredible: 12(13 soon) EPLs, 5 FA Cups, 2 Champions' Leagues... Some of the goals he scored were brilliant also (see his goal vs Arsenal in the FA Cup semi final). Off the pitch - ****.
Unfortunately the same applies to a lot of the best footballers. At least Giggs has done things the right way with his football career.
He is a true Pro, his private life is simply that, private; he has crossed social bounds, but he has not broken any law, just hearts. Folk list the games and achievements, but just imagine the training hours to maintain his standard, truely incredible and puts Lance Armstrong straight back in his box. It seems to be a year for Wales, Giiggs, Swansea's emphatic cup win and Cardiff riding high and proud (they say it comes in threes) - after the sadness of Speed, they are due whatever they get, as long as they earn it and they are!
Just noticed this video on the BBC Sport homepage of his EPL Goals - there are some crackers in there. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/21638922
A great waste if you ask me. If they can play in our league, why can't they play in our national team? Him and Bale, either one would have made enough of a difference to England so that we might have won something. Great player on the pitch, and until the ****e about him off the pitch came out, I always admired him for actually just getting on with playing and not courting the media. Sadly we saw why in the end, so yeah, on the pitch - awesome, off the pitch - twat.
i dont know Giggs or his brother n missus so i wont get upset over the story . besides he is a great footballer and the **** label has been well overused on this forum recently . its as if theres a dozen or so posters have found a new word in their xmas cracker or something.
He isn't the best one-club man, though. That accolade goes to this man: please log in to view this image
Nah, no chance. Franco Baresi all the way. On Maldini's last ever appearance for Milan even the Milan Ultras held up a banner saying "Baresi is our only true captain". And Baresi had a trial with Inter as a youngster, the team he supported, and they rejected him
Another great player. Interesting to compare their relative achievements. Both always played at the highest level, and Giggs only needs one more 1 year contract after the one just announced to equal that of Maldini. It'll be tough for Giggs, given the position he plays, more exposed to injury and batterings as a winger/midfielder, compared to Maldini's career as mainly a "fullback". It's been said that Paulo made on average 1 tackle every 2 games...just that his exceptional positional play made him the effective defender for so long. Giggs avoided serious injury all those years 'cos nobody could catch him. Great accomplishments by both of them.
