@SimonPeach: Spoke to @ryanbertrand3 the other day about joining #SaintsFC permanently - something the on-loan #CFC left-back would be keen to do. @SimonPeach: "I've got to wait & see but there's no reason why not. There is a good base to the club, we're pulling in the right direction" @SimonPeach: Bertrand: "We have fantastic fans, fantastic players, a fantastic manager. It has been a good experience so far so I don't see why not" @SimonPeach: Yes, it is a lot of money but Bertrand would be a fine purchase. Great player, young, ambitious & the kind of guy that you'd want in a squad DTLW
Good. He's a very good player and he's made me not miss Shaw for a single second. If he plays as well as he has of late he'll find himself in the England squad. And what a kick in the face that we be for ManU.
No brainer...good for us and good for him. After so many moves, he needs to leave Chelsea and he appears to be pretty pissed off with them anyway.
I was one that defended the signing of Bettrand in the summer. Not because I thought it was excellent, but because I felt it was done to cover/allow Targett time to come through and it made sense. Now I think our scouting system already had their eyes on him knowing the previous year Shaw was soon to be off. Ryan has been sensational going forward and defensively. He really has impressed me, so come on Les, get that cheque written.
Nice to see someone who's happy to join especially as he's done the big club thing and therefore is less likely to jump ship at the first opportunity.
Bertrand is a lesson for a lot of youngsters...a good player mothballed by a big club and moved from pillar to post. Chelsea did something right because he is obviously a good player with the right habits, but would never get to be a first team regular. Then, when he found a team to move to, they lied and said he was still in their thoughts. He is definitely ready to sign now. He is the closest he has ever been to Chelsea....just behind them in the league
I thought his loan was agreed with a option to make permanent for £10m? Obviously wages need to be agreed. Would be a great signing for us and as FLT says provides great air cover for Targett to come through when he is ready
When I read how Chelsea have played about with his career I got slightly annoyed for the guy, and that takes me some doing. They basically played him like a fish on a line. He is a very capable England quality LB, who is now 25 and should have had his career path sorted 4 or 5 years ago. I'm bound to say that Saints wouldn't have buggered him about in the same way. Then again, the lure of Chelsea - even the club name is still kind of kewl.
Yeah, the fee was pre-agreed at just short of £10m. So if Ryan wants to stay, and Saints want to keep him - Chelsea can't object. It would just be a case of agreeing a contract between Bertrand and Southampton.
I'm neutral. 10m in today's market doesn't seem like an exorbitant fee. OTOH, we've consistently managed to bring in quality defenders for a lot less than that. I don't see the need to rush into a deal right now when presumably we have the option to buy until the end of the season. If they sign Bertrand permanently, that's fine. But if Saints have their eye on someone better that's okay as well. For me, I felt a couple weeks ago that decisions would have to be made on Davis, Cork/Wanyama, Bertrand, Fonte/Alderweireld/Gardos). We probably need to hang on to at least three of those players, and should look to sell/move on from at least two. We've signed Davis since then. We definitely don't want to make a habit of going through what happened last summer (not that it was our choice), but we do need to try and improve at a couple of spots each year and to do that it often means letting go of players, even if they're good.
The guy hasn't been that hard done by Chelsea. He was their regular left back for a whole season, and played the full CL final, which they won. How many other English 25 year olds can say that?
Disagree with much of this. I'd be looking to sign Bertrand at the earliest opportunity and whilst we are on the up. Just because we've agreed a fee doesn't mean he can't go elsewhere if he knows there is interest (granted, he'd need to wait until after the loan term) and it doesn't stop him from requesting whatever he wants transfer fee wise. Also don't think we need to be culling the squad at all this summer. I accept that we need to continue improving and there are areas where I'd like to see this happen (a highly rated, young striker or two and sub gk mainly). Add that to our current squad, I'd be very happy - it's not like any of them are anywhere near past their peak and certain players (like Cork, Fonte and Davis) would be very hard to replace in terms of what they bring to the team/squad. Ramirez, Hooiveld, Osvaldo and Boruc should be the only ones the club should be actively looking to cut (plus Yoshida, Mayuka and Isgrove if the right players are ready to come through the system), with Bertrand and Alderweild two of our priority signings - and as early as possible.
Must admit to being pretty uninspired when we signed Ryan Bertrand, but what a loan signing he has turned out to be? Very strange that wherever he was loaned out in the past he never really impressed, I guess that he was never anywhere long enough to feel settled and a part of the team, by comparison this Saints team must be an easy team to fit into. Sign him up.
Not just aimed at you Toss Saints but anyone else who has been saying similar. What hard evidence is there that JRod wanted/wants to go?
