I thought the team performance yesterday was excellent but Russell was absolutely superb. The way he marshalled a top top striker in Kevin Davies (which ulitimately lead to his withdrawal at half time), just shows the measure of the performance <applause>

I was very surprised by just how well Rusty did yesterday, he was very shaky at his natural RB position against Wigan and I was expecting Davies to cause him all sorts of problems, but he looked like a Premier League CB that game!

Russell Martin is a bone-fide professional for doing that job yesterday. I think he needs a big man to support him as he's not your stereotype bruiser centre back but he's pretty quick and times challenges very well. It's up to lambert if he keeps it this way but if it's worked out well why change it I suppose, we have an excellent rb in naughton who can get forward and cross on both feet so why not put the older head in at cb.

Good I wasn't his greatest fan in his first season, but in the last one he was easily the most impressive and improved player in our squad. He had an absolute mare against Wigan on the opening day good to see him back and glad to see Lambert making some changes.

RM is not new to playing CB, he has previous, though at a lower level.

He could probably play there too if only we could clone him

We've had one or two in recent years who were equally at home in defence or attack, the two that spring readily to mind are Dion Dublin and Chris Sutton!

Wonder if it's anything to do with having place names as surnames?
