We all know about Felix's fixation on fitness and the myriad of stories about him running players ragged. This post is not to repeat those. Rather it's to reflect on one aspect of our poor start to the season and highlighted in this statistic - of 77 shots on goal only 17 have been on target Arguably 77 is not a bad 'hit' rate in five games. It suggests that we must be creating chances and if we keep doing so goals will surely come. The reality is very different though; most have been long range or 'snatched at'. Critically we have shown very little composure in front of goal and even the 17 on target have, in the main, rarely troubled the opposition keeper. The stats for our strikers are: Woodrow has had 7 shots on goal, none on target. Rodallega, only 1 in 4. Ross McCormack has 4 in 6. You can see where the argument is going. Namely, with the season now well underway Felix should forego some of the running and general fitness exercises and instead concentrate on shooting practice. Obviously this is not focused entirely on our strikers since a mixture of "the rest" account for 60 shots and only 12 on target. While in a way it's encouraging that they are prepared to have a go, there may just be a case that this group also practice getting the ball to the strikers instead of having hapless shots.
Those stats also suggest that McCormack is a cut above the rest, which is encouraging (at least, it is when we think about McCormack. Not so much when we think about the others!)
